QRP and Portable Station Equipment

My primary portable radio is a SGC SG-2020. With the sunspot cycle declining I've found the 20 Watt output to be just enough extra punch to make contacts reliably. The new ADSP2 is also a great help in portable operation. I also use a Z-11 Autotuner (now discontinued) from LDG Electronics to move a step closer to my version of the ultimate portable station. When I first experimented with portable operation I used a single band SSB/CW radio from MFJ... it only took about a week to get hooked on portable/QRP operation!

My CW is steadily improving since I discovered that I really want to use it. I found that switching from one set of paddles to another for home or portable operation was making things harder for me so I've settled on a really nice set of portable paddles from Doug Hauff at American Morse. They are reasonably priced, have a nice feel to them and are quite rugged.

Portable, low power operations require even more from an antenna system than any other type of amateur operating. I've experimented with several portable vertical and dipole antennas but recently purchased a new W3FF Buddipole. This is the best of the small antennas in my opinion. I like to experiment with various types of antennas in the field but this is one that never stays behind at home.
