COMMODORE'S CORNER RICK DAVIDSON |
Not much for me to report this month. Everyone did a fine job on the steak roast and that’s behind us now. We had a lot of compliments from our guest boats. One person quoted:
" This has always been a great function and I didn’t think it could get any better. This year it did." Another club said they plan their vacation around our steak roast. I think we served a great meal and everyone had a good time . Our attendance was down this year and a couple of reasons I think this happened was Lincoln Electric had their company picnic that day at Cedar Point and most employees who didn’t go to the picnic had to work. We always have a good number of Lincoln guys that support our functions but not this time. I think another reason is that was the first nice weekend and with a lot of people still getting their boat and dock ready , the steak roast snuck up on them. Either way we made less money and hope to make up the difference with the Pig Roast. Everyone’s help would be greatly appreciated.
We have had a couple of problems with wave runners speeding up and down the river this year. Last week Al Murn and I got some OH #’s and even a plate # of a truck and trailer. I went to the Sheriffs office and talked to the Lt. in charge of the Marine Patrol.
He
went to the gentlemen’s house and issued him a warning. He also discussed our
problem with the Coast Guard, O.D.N.R., Division of Wildlife and Metro Parks
Rangers. They were all un-aware of a speeding problem that far up the river and
all agreed that they need to patrol up to the bridge. I told Lt. Jeff Sherwood
that we all appreciated his prompt service.
See you at the club

Finally!! The boating season is underway, now that the weather and water are giving us a break and some of the major projects are out of the way at the club. Feels great to get on with summer and go boating!
Thanks to Sparky and Al for helping me get the seed and straw down in the now famous pumpout area. Hopefully we’ll see some grass over there pretty soon. Speaking of the pumpout; I’ve been checking the bill acceptor pretty frequently and it appears to be functioning ok. I would suggest using DRY, clean bills and definitely put them in facing the right direction. If you have any issues please let me know or hang a note on the bulletin board. I believe we have the fittings that Sparky ordered, at $5 bucks each, so come see me if you signed up for one last year. Any of our new members in need of a pump out fitting please see Sparky or me and we’ll get it handled.
Hate to do this, but I need to go over some of the common courtesy issues I hear about as Rear Commodore, along with reminders regarding some of the ground rules I see getting away from us.
PLEASE PICK UP AFTER YOUR PUPPIES!! I’ve watched some of my best friends disregard this issue and honestly, it’s a disappointment to me and plain rude if another member or guest steps into a “pile” that someone didn’t clean up. Pets must be on a leash and restrained at all times. If your pet becomes a nuisance we have the right to ask you to keep them home. I would absolutely hate to enforce this rule, so I feel compelled to remind every one of my pet owners to remember this one, so we don’t ever have to have the discussion.
I’ve noticed more of the kids wearing their life jackets after my reminder from last month and it’s always good to bring it up again, for safety sake. THANK YOU. Still see some little ones without, but far better than before.
I want to thank the members for parking their guests, who are visiting in motor homes and campers, on the hill. Please keep in mind that overnight stays should be limited to 72 hours or come see me and we’ll discuss arrangements for longer periods. Along the lines of parking, I am going to discuss with E-Board the possibility of assigning a “designated” area for storing rafts, canoes, inflatables and their associated trailers. This would avoid overloading our beautiful dock areas. The ground rule is written but an area isn’t designated yet, or at least one that I’m aware of. More to come on this subject.
Thanks to everyone who is cutting grass at unattended docks this year. Make sure you log your works hours for effort well spent. It’s very much appreciated. If you use the mowers please keep them clean underneath and check the oil before you fire them up. If you use the last of the gas please fill them up, so the next poor guy who goes to use them, doesn’t get stuck with dry tanks! Thanks goes out to new members Dan and Patty Haliburton for the weedwacker. Always nice to have power equipment donated to the club. Al…you’re the man!
Always remember to do less than 5 MPH in our lot…PLEASE. If not for the dust reasons, for the kids who are always out and about. It would be terrible for anyone to get hurt because someone had to race the 300ft to their boat.
Ok, that’s enough yapping about the rules now on to general stuff. I’m requesting that our members take care of the flowerbeds, out at the street and just outside of our gate. They are pretty big and require some muscle to keep them clean and groomed. My wife busted her chops to get them squared away so now she needs the membership to pick up the ball and get hours in by maintaining them please. (again the magic word)
If anyone needs a new club burgee to fly please see any of the flag, or my wife and we’ll hook you up with one for $20 bucks.
Thanks goes out to Davey, BJ and crew for another great Steak Roast this year. As always, the food, band and people were great, along with the weather. AWESOME GUYS! I have to thank my parking posse too. Al, Jerry, Barry and helper Brianne.
I think last but not least is; I have to pull off a dock bidding session on July 9th, Sunday at high noon until one o’clock, bar area at WRYC. This will clear up any old docks vacated this year so they are open for new members coming in. If anyone is interested in moving come see me for a dock bid intent slip. Remember seniority rules. Never thought I’d be admitting to be old is a good thing!
Take care and have a safe, happy, enjoyable summer. Come see me if you need anything.
FLEET CAPTAIN MARY ELLEN KESSLER |
Congratulation! Dave & BJ for putting on another successful Steak Roast. The food was great, the music good. All our visitors seemed to have a great time. We had some 18 boats visiting the club from, Ashtabula, Riverside, Canada, C.L.Y.C., and Grand River. I would like to thank Al Murn and Lou German for helping me dock the boats. Great job guys!!
Our next scheduled Cruise is to the Riverside Steak Roast on July 15th. The Sign up sheet is on the board.
Please sign up by Thursday the 13th so that I can call Riverside with an approximate count of people and boats. Try to support their function. We had eight boats from Riverside for the steak roast.
Be sure to get you tickets for the upcoming W.R.Y.C. Pig Roast on July 8th. Menu sounds great.
We already have had calls from other clubs wanting information. It should be another great time.
We had boat inspections on June 24th. If you missed out, give me a call and if there are enough boats I will try to schedule another inspection day.
SECRETARY GREG MULLINS |
Well gang, another newsletter to write. Nothing new except, wasn’t that a great steak roast. The weather was perfect, not to mention the steaks. We met a lot of other boaters from other clubs. This was our seconded roast, and I don’t have a lot of others to compare it to, but I think it was fantastic. I heard some other club’s members saying how nice it was. I’m starting to think we at W.R.Y.C. put on one of the best. And how about that band, they even played an extra hour. I tell you, B.J and Davie deserve a lot of thanks for all of the work they put into the weekend. That is a lot of planning and hard work to set that all up. I would also like to thank all of the members that jumped in with their help. It takes a big group effort to pull a function like that off. Fathers day breakfast, Sunday was just what we needed the day after. Thanks to all of the P/C’s.
I would also like to say thanks to Mary Ellen and her helpers for getting all of the guests docked. If your docking goes smooth it just makes for a better weekend. We have a few new members who joined in the past couple of months, so when you see them be sure to say hi. We tend to forget how it feels to be the new guy, trying to remember everyone’s name. Here’s hoping for a great 4th. Hope to see everyone at the club. Remember the lake is pretty busy after the fire works. So be careful coming back in. Don’t forget to record your work hours for every thing. I will be updating them soon.

This is from a ranger at Glen Canyon. Several National Park Service locations are trying to ban them.
In the past three weeks we have had to Airvac four serious injured people from Lake Powell that were engaged in a new water activity called Kite Tubing. This activity involves a large round inflated tube that is towed behind a boat at 20 to 40 mph. The user holds onto the kite tube as it rises into the air to a height of 15 to 60 feet. Controlling a kite tube is extremely challenging and the slightest upset in its balance cause the tub to dive down into the water at a high rate of speed. The individual on these tubes impacted the water at both the forward tow speed of the vessel and then at the downward accelerated speed, which can be as high as 70 MPH. As a medic I have responded to three of these calls in a one week period and my Kite Tubing patients all had to be Airvac to Level I Trauma Centers. A 29-year-old male who suffered a broken neck (double Fx of C-2) and a 26-year-old male with a hemopneumothorax produced by broken ribs. My third patient a 14-year old female suffered a whiplash injury and was released from the hospital. Several weeks’ earlier another Medic had a similar case at Lake Powell involving a young man with a severely punctured lung. Several local hospitals have reported recently seeing Kite Tube patients with similar injuries from people that have self transported to their facilities. Taking with other water enforcement agencies they are seeing Kite Tubing injuries and I have heard of one fatality in Texas. This death was due to a transected aortic commonly seen in deceleration auto and airplane type accidents. Interviews with friends and family members of patients have shown a disturbing trend with this use. In all cases at Glen Canyon NRA, multiple minor Kite Tubing injuries occurred with other members of the boating party prior to the incidents that required advanced life support. All victims stated they were using the kite tubes as directed when they suddenly lifted to dangerous heights, became unstable, and plunged up side down into the water. Friends of the victims that did not immediately report their injuries advised that they had coughing up blood, had torn muscles, whiplash type injuries and broken ribs.
