The Western Reserve Yacht Club was founded in 1969, at the Hi-Skipper Marina, Eastlake, Ohio located on the Chagrin River. The first Commodore was John Wargo for the year 1970. Meetings at that time were held off-site. Most members took advantage when a package deal for docking at "Garrett's Landing" on the Grand River was offered. W.R.Y.C. was admitted to Inter-lake Yachting Association in 1973 and to Greater Cleveland Boating Association shortly after.
The ground for our present clubhouse was broken in 1976 with work and materials donated by the membership. In addition, as many as 13 members bought bonds to initiate the project. Since its completion, it has been the site of most of our meetings, club functions and a general gathering place for the members.
Thirty one years later, our membership has grown to 100. Our addition to the old clubhouse,
completed in 1988, now makes seating possible for 250 people.
In 1995 and 1996 we added a new ladies' restroom and a special
"boutique" area for the sale of club clothing and
accessories. On May 1, 1999, after many years of leasing, the
club was able to purchase the clubhouse property, thereby insuring us a
more stable future.
