Dear Sirs:
Today I received a letter from your company thanking me for
selecting AT&T for my long distance carrier. Unfortunately I had
not selected AT&T. I called my local service provider and found
that your company had changed my long distance service without my
permission. I find this to be a despicable action taken by your
company.
Approximately 2 weeks ago I did call your company for a
price quote. During the price quote, your employee asked for my
address. I told the person that I did not want to subscribe. I
was only getting the price to compare costs. After comparing
prices for the kinds of calls I make, I found that another long
distance carrier provided cheaper service. Since this was my
current long distance carrier, I thought nothing more of it.
When I called AT&T today to ask about your letter, your
representative said that the change order had come from my local
service provider. I called my local provider to ask about the
change in long distance service. GTE said that the change order
had come through on magnetic tape and was not entered locally.
They would have had a record of it if it had been ordered
locally. I asked the GTE representative again telling her AT&T
had said it was a local request. They again said that it came
via magnetic tape.
I can only conclude from this set of circumstances that any
price inquiry to your company will be interpreted as a request to
change to your company. In addition, your company appears to be
mistaken as to who originated the change in long distance
service. In the future you can be sure that I will not be a
customer of AT&T even if your rates are lower than your
competitors.
Sincerely,
Michael B. Bass
