'98 Jeep Wrangler HF Antenna Coupler Installation

Here is the SG-230 coupler as installed in the Wrangler.  It has been bolted to the right side wheel well, just forward of the roll bar mounting point.

Here is the business end of the coupler.  I used the center conductor from RG-214 coax for the insulated wire that feeds the ball mount. The book says that very high RF voltages can exist at this point so make sure no one gets near this when you are transmitting.

Look at the coupler from the driver's seat.  The grounding strap is connected from the stud (on the coupler case) to the mounting screw that attaches to the fender well.  I am still testing the system to see if this is sufficient or if I need to add another grounding point.

Here is the Hustler stainless steel ball mount.  For those of you that are wondering, it really is worth the money and it is better than the one from Radio Shack (been there, done that).

A lot of the sheet metal in vehicles will flex too much to handle a ball mounted 10' whip.  I used the the edge of the body panel, as shown here, to strengthen the upper portion of the mount.  The 2nd photo from the top of this page shows the top two mounting bolts that are positioned above the point where the body panel is welded to the fender well.  The 3rd mounting bolt was drilled below the weld line, which put the entire mount over this very strong seam.  There is vitually NO flexing on this mount.  You may wish to consider a similiar setup if at all possible.

You can get more details about the SG-230 antenna coupler that I had in my '89 Cherokee.
