COPPER FIRE

 

CURRENT LOCATION:               6/7/02, 3:00 a.m. near the town of Green Valley

 

ORIGINAL LOCATION/TIME:     6/5/02. 2:40 p.m. San Francisquito Canyon and Copperhill Road

 

ACRES:                     15607.  Burning towards the northeast

 

CONTAINMENT:      5%

 

FUEL:                         Medium to heavy brush in inaccessible terrain

 

EQUIPMENT:            123 engines, 50 hand crews, 8 fixed wing, 5 helicopters, 5 water tenders

                                    [aircraft only flying during daylight]

 

PERSONNEL:            2000

 

EVACUATIONS:           

-         Mandatory

-         Warm Springs

-         Fire Camp 14

-         Green Valley

-         1100 residents have been evacuated from the Green Valley area

 

Evacuation Centers:

-         Highland High School, 39055 25th St. W and Avenue P

-         Saugus High School, 21900 Centurion Way, x Bouquet Canyon Rd.

 

THREATS:                

-         400 homes in the Green Valley area

 

DAMAGE/LOSS:      7 cabins damaged or destroyed, 14 out buildings

 

INJURIES:                  5 firefighters (minor injuries)

 

CAUSE:                     Under investigation

 

LOST ANIMALS:            Lost animals will be sent to the Castaic Animal Shelter, 31044 Charlie Canyon Road, (661) 257-3192

 

 

 

 

 

ROAD CLOSURES:            - San Francisquito Canyon between Copperhill Road and Spunky Canyon Road

- Elizabeth Lake Road at San Francisquito Road

- Lake Hughes Road at Dry Gulch

- Bouquet Canyon Road at Spunky Canyon Road

 

 

 

 

AGENCIES INVOLVED:

Fire:                Burbank, California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, City of Los Angeles, Compton, County of Los Angeles, Downey, Glendale, Kern, Montebello, United States Forest Service, Pasadena, Santa Fe Springs, and other fire departments

 

Other:              L. A. Sheriff, L. A. County Animal Control, California Highway Patrol, Southern California Edison, Los Angeles DWP, L. A. County Road Department

 

NATIONAL FIRE PLAN:

The National Fire Plan has allowed the Forest Service to hire more crews and train them to be ready for fire assignments earlier in the year.  As a result, we have been better prepared to deal with the early fire season that has come upon us.
