Merely Old
to Phyllis Shuch on her 90th birthday, from Your Son The Doctor
My mother had a party.
I went there with my wife -
A gathering to celebrate
Her ninety years of life.
I feel extremely fortunate
That Mom is still alive,
Especially considering
That I am sixty five.
I know the quarter century
Between her age and mine
Has brought her many challenges.
But, mentally, she's fine.
Her own mom was quite robust
To the age of ninety six.
I asked about their secret -
Could she tell me any tricks?
"I never have accumulated
Much financial wealth,"
Said Mom. "Though it was not by choice,
I opted still for health.
"And yet, it's mostly attitude
That's kept me fit and strong.
You have to remain positive
If wishing to live long.
"You have the right genetics -
You chose your parents well.
But how long we're alloted,
Not one of us can tell.
"So, live life to the fullest,
Whatever time you're given.
I wish you, mostly, no regrets
About the life you're livin'."
Mom's doing well, considering...
But, if the truth be told,
She'll soon be old and feeble,
While I am merely old.
