I first knew about radios in 1975 when my dad got interested in CB's . I enjoyed talking on the radio. I had my own walkie talkie and I also used to use his. I remember I used to enjoy sitting in the car and talking on the radio. Then I found out about scanners and shortwave radio and even though I didn't have a scanner I knew what they did. My dad always said that they were too expensive and he wasn't going to get one. He bought a shortwave radio and I enjoyed listening to that with him. Then in 1994 my then boyfriend wanted to start talking on ham radios so we inquired about it and started studying for the test. I have been an Amateur Radio Operator since November 1994 when I was first licensed as a "no-code" Technician class licensee KC5KWE. It wasn't until January 2001 after I started going with my new boyfriend, Jim W5CPA that I decided to try for my General Class license. In April 2001 I passed the written examination and the 5-wpm Morse Code examination to upgrade to General. Exactly 4 weeks later, I passed the written examination to upgrade to an Amateur Extra Class licensee. In early October, I applied for the vanity call sign of N5YL which I received later in the month. I am very happy with my call sign and have received quite a number of comments regarding it. The past four years have been very good to me. I spent 1 year on the Board of Directors for the San Antonio Radio Club Inc., which is a 501(c)7 not-for-profit corporation. I am also a Volunteer Examiner with the ARRL & W5YI -Volunteer Examination Coordinator where I give examinations for Amateur Radio licenses.
