WELCOME to my website. I’m David, N5MXI. My interest in radio communication began during the CB Radio Craze of the 1970’s. I was given a set of Walkie-Talkies on CB Channel 14 for Christmas. This was the spark that began my radio journey. A few years past and I made my first radio purchase - a 3 channel, crystal controlled CB walkie-talkie. I later acquired my first vehicle in the early 80’s which of course had to have a CB along with police scanner. The 40 channel CB required an FCC license to operate so I became KBSL6416. Shortly after, the FCC discontinued the license requirement for CB. CB radio became inundated with operators after the license requirement was dropped and radio etiquette became non-existent. This prompted me to begin looking into Amateur Radio. The local radio club ran an ad in the paper announcing a Novice class course to be held at Red Cross. I signed up the same day. I passed my 5 word per minute Morse code and Novice class tests in June 1988 to earn my call – KB5GPA. The following month I successfully tested for technician class license and was given the callsign I still have today – N5MXI. I hope to earn my General class license in the near future even though I rarely venture on to the HF bands. My main interests are in VHF/UHF including digital communications, IRLP, Echolink, Dstar, and APRS. 73 and thanks for stopping by.
