A Little About N4UPB, Carroll D. Harrod, Vero Beach, FL   32960 


                                                                                                                                                                                      Born::  December 25, 1921, Grand Ledge, Michigan (A questionable Christmas Present For My Parents and the reason for the name,Carroll, {courtesy of my older brother})

Education:  High School, Grand Ledge, MI 1939.  DePauw University, Greencastle, IN '39     to '41, General Motors Institute, Flint, MI  '46-'48 (finished college degree-Engineering)

Military Service:  Entered Service from Grand Ledge, MI 1941.  Basic Training in Camp Roberts, CA (qualified for OCS-Officers Candidate School).  Attended OCS at Ft. Sill, OK, graduated as Second Lieutenant (Artillery).  Trained with 87th Armored Field Artillery Bn. at Ft. Knox, KY.  Departed U.S.A on January 1, 1944 from Camp Shanks, NY aboard the Queen Elizabeth.  Stationed in Banbury, England until D-Day, June 6, 1944 when unit landed on Utah Beach in Normandy, France in direct artillelry support for the 82nd Airborn Division.  Fought in the battle of Normandy until August 15, 1944 when received machine gun wounds from a German half-track and was eventually evacuated to a U.S General Hospital in souuthern England.  After surgery and recuperation in England was eventually returned to unit, 87th Armored Field Artillery Battalion,  and when the war ended spent several months in the Army of Occupation in Germany.  Returned to U.S. and discharged from Active Duty and entered Reserve on January 18, 1946.  After finishing college education, returned to active duty on August 16, 1948 and entered a one year tour of duty for purpose of acquiring a Regular Army Commission.  This tour was successfully completed at Camp Hood, TX and was subsequently shipped to Korea in 1950 when the Korean War started.  Promoted to the rank of Captain in November, 1950.  Was wounded in action and captured by the Chinese Peoples Volunteer Army  in February, 1951.  In the process of being moved to a permanent Prisoner Of War Camp in North Korea, I and a fellow prisoner, Lieutenant Wilbur Webster escaped and made it back to our own forces in March, 1951.

 I was evacuated by air to the U.S. via Hawaii and arrived at Percy Jones General Hospital, Battle Creek, MI for treatment and was eventually retired, with rank of Captain, for reasons of permanet disability on September 30, 1951, thus ending my military career which I had hoped would continue until I had completed at least 20 years of active duty.    

Military Awards:  Silver Star (with cluster), Bronze Star, Purple Heart (with cluster).

Military Service Medals:  American Campaign Medal, European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Army Of Occupation Medal (with Germany Clasp), National Defense Service Medal, Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal, Republic Of  Korea Presidential Unit Citation.

Foreign Awards:  South Korean Presidential Unit Award, French Normandy Invasion Medal

Business Experience:  After my Army career was ended I got a got a job with Oldsmobile Division of General Motors in 1951 which I held until 1968 at which time I was Business Management Manager in the Oldsmobile Chicago Zone Office in Park Ridge, IL.  I left this position in 1968 and became associated with Virgin Island Properties, Inc. a conglomerate with holdings on St. Croix, USVI.  I worked with this company until 1973 when I returned to the U.S. and became a broker and part owner of Key Realty Brokerage in Grand Ledge, MI.  In 1978 retired fully from business activities and built a retirement home on east shore of Lake Michigan, five miles north of Elk Rapids, MI or 25 miles north of Traverse City, MI.  Lived there eleven years and was a full-time hunter and fisherman.  In 1988 we moved to Florida and Made Vero Beach, FL our year-round residence, and have enjoyed the mild climate of Florida from then up to present, missing only the northern change of seasons.

Family: Married first wife, Dorothy, in 1946 and we had four children, (three girls, including twins, and one boy).  First wife died of cancer in 1972 in San Juan, Puerto (while I was working for the company in St. Croix, USVI).  Remarried in 1973 to Mary Ann Howenstine who had two grown children with families bringing our total family to six (four girls and two boys).  At last count we have fourteen grandchildren, ranging from high school to married with family, three great grandchildren (two boys, one girl, and and two unknowns on the way to arrive in spring '98).

Hobbies & Special Interests:  The list gets smaller as the age gets larger.  Spend most of my spare time operating my amateur radio station and keeping my accounting and investing records on my Personal Computer.  Present compter is an AST P-166 with most of the necessary  "goodies".
