The Columbia Amateur Radio Club Emergency Response Team (CARCERT) was formed to build and operate a communications trailer, and respond to emergencies within the greater Midlands area of South Carolina. It has the capability to operate on both the HF bands and VHF/UHF bands during a response.

The CARCERT communications trailer was formally dedicated in July of 1998. The communications trailer has been used as an amateur radio command post at several public service events since its dedication. The Club would like to thank the CARCERT committee of 1997-98 for the many sacrifices they made in getting the trailer ready for use by the local amateur radio community.

The Columbia Amateur Radio Club conducted a remodel of the CARCERT Trailer under the guidance of Technical Services Team in 2003. A much needed Air Conditioner was added to the trailer and the interior layout was changed to add three operating stations with HF,VHF, UHF and Red Cross Communications. The CARCERT Trailer has it's own antenna systems including a 40 ft fiberglass pole plus exterior antenna jacks located on the outside of the trailer. CARCERT is now a fully functioning Command Post for Emergency Operations available to dispatched anywhere.

The CARCERT trailer is dedicated to the= memory of deceased past Club president Bob Truex (N4QWL). The Club has obtained Bob Truex's call N4QWL as a club call sign for use by the CARCERT. The Columbia Amateur Club would like to express our eternal gratitude to Mr. John and Mrs. Doris Truex for the generous donation of their late son's, Bob Truex's, amateur equipment for use in the CARCERT communications trailer. Thank You Mr. & Mrs Truex.
