The ARRL 1999
September VHF QSO Party was my first attempt at Roving. I consider
myself a "casual" rover. We have all seen the pictures of the rovers
out there with an antenna farm on the roof and all bands from 50 MHz to
light! As a matter of fact, during my first trip as a rover, I met
one of these rovers.
Maybe one year I'll have a super rover station, but for now I'm starting
out with my ICOM 706
MKIIG which gives me three bands to work with. This rig gives me a
great start. I'm currently using a PAR 6 meter loop, a M2 HO Loop for 2
meters, and for 430 I'm using a 4 element beam at 10 feet (when stopped
of course!) I'll slowly work on getting more antennas and more power.
One advantage I have, I live in Northern Virginia and I'm only about
60 miles from the Skyline Drive, which puts me in a great position to rove!
Listen for me in the next contest as I rove the mountains of Northern Virginia. |
