High Speed Digital Networks and Multimedia
The rapid pace
of technological change in the last decade is nothing short of amazing. Things
once considered dreams or in the realm of science fiction are now in the
mainstream, even taken for granted. Even more amazing is this whiz bang technology
is readily available and inexpensive.
How can amateurs use this new technology?
The ARRL HSMM Work Group is working on this question.
We are exploring the many technologies available today, from HF to Microwave.
The 802.11 technology is our
current focus technology. We use TCP/IP for our networking protocol.
We are not wedded to the 802.11 technology alone, but with it's universal
availability and with the prices being so attractive it a good way
to jump start amateur radio into using High Speed Networking.
Because we are using the TCP/IP network protocol our network can
use lots of the software used on the internet. This software includes
Web servers, browsers, web cams, voice over IP and more. One of the groups
favorite software tools is Netmeeting which is Available on most computers
running MS windows.
Who should be interested?
The HSMM
Work Group believes the Ham Internet, or Hinternet as we call it, appeals
to those who like to tinker with hardware, write software or play with radio
networks. DX chasers can use the Hinternet with spotting networks and digital
QSL card exchange. Those who enjoy rag chewing have lots of bandwidth to
play with and with the use of gateways can talk and see world wide. Emergency
communications and public service events? You bet! The possibilities are
infinite, let's get going!
