DESCRIPTION

With the old rover van gone and the new one still under construction, I was unable to go roving for this contest. The next plan was to try the Hilltopper category for the first time by throwing a bunch of portable gear in the new van and using the two 12VDC accessory jacks for QRP power. Checking the forecast Friday night brought an end to that plan, as rain and lightning were forecast for both days of the contest for all of my rover sites around the northeast. So the only option left was to operate from the home station which means a 6m-only entry. Saturday morning I installed a temporary third antenna and all showed an SWR of 1.3:1 or less. I ended up working 40 contacts, and 63 percent were CW. There was bad lightning static both days, and Sunday I had to shut down at 1938Z when thunder became audible. There were multiple trees into houses one county to my east. Click here for the wind damage probability map. I made one skywave contact to Florida and one to Illinois; the rest were troposcatter. Not too bad for a barefoot station with no preamps, no towers, and three rotorless directional antennas 20 feet above ground or less from western FN22. Best troposcatter DX was Virginia station W4RM FM18 (287 miles) to the south, Ohio station N8BI EN91 (291 miles) to the west, and Maine station K1TOL FN44 (297 miles) to the northeast.
