This page highlights my amateur radio activities (or lack thereof...) I'll update it as often as possible to include descriptions and photographs of what I've been up to radio-wise, including individual and club activities, public service events, etc...
Having finally upgraded to the General class license, most of my amateur radio activity is split between the HF and VHF/UHF bands. On the HF side I'm really getting into contesting, as well as DX'ing. On VHF/UHF, besides normal repeater operation I enjoy contesting, packet and APRS (Automatic Position Reporting System).
I participate in emergency communications through both the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (ARES) & Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Service (RACES).
I'm also very interested in other aspects of radio; including satellites, ATV, public service/utility scanning, pirates and radio history.
To be updated soon.
Packet RadioCombining my interests in radio and computers is easy with packet radio. When traveling I enjoy bringing along a small packet station consisting of a laptop, Kantronics TNC and dual-band HT. I set up the station, indoors or out (weather permitting), and simply place my 5/8th-wave mag-mount antenna outside.
As you can see from the photograph, the station is simple, uncluttered and easy to set-up/break-down. It's a lot of fun to be sitting on the terrace on a warm summer night working VHF packet.
I also do a bit of mobile APRS/packet operating using a laptop and my Kenwood TM-D700. Pictures of that setup to come soon.
