I was granted an FCC Amateur Radio Licence on July 20, 1993 as N2NGN at the age of 38 at Belmar in southern New Jersey. I had difficulty with the exam on the first attempt and had to return a month later to retake the exam and passed. Since the exam was very fresh in my mind, I studied CW like crazy, and I could not retain what I had previously learned. After many attempts at it, I finally figured that I would have to stay simply a no-code tech. I joined two local clubs and learned all I could about the hobby. My co-worker and friend, Joe - KA2OOR, and I spent a lot of time together, working with his amateur radio repeaters and watching him do miracles with it. My interest was with the controllers and programing them and keeping track of the numerous codes associated with that and other amateur's auto-patch codes and useage as a control op for Joe. As a radio operator I took a course and became a certified weather observer with The Skywarn Program for the National Weather Service out of Mt. Holly, NJ in October of 1995. Since Joe and I were control ops for Joe's repeaters, we both participated in this service for the area. I valued the time I spent with Joe back then and all that I was exposed to.
I used to operate an ICOM IC-27H, 2 meter rig in my van, and had an Alinco dual band H/T, which I later sold to Joe. Now I operate an ICOM IC-W32A dual band H/T.
