foxhunt fun friday 6/18/99

I got my lunch at Elmo's, went to the northeast corner of the 337 field and
hid the fox at the base of some trees. The fox puts out less than half a
watt into a dummy load. It's signal is strong all over my house when it's on
the bench. Today I could barely hear it myself from 200 yards away unless I
held my HT up in the air.

Brian, K2AS showed up soon after noon and found the fox fairly quickly. We
then took turns hiding it and finding it a couple of times. Soon a group of
geeky looking guys wandered over (led by K2OID) wondering why they couldn't
hear the fox on 145.565 as I had published in my email. I soon realized my
note should have said 146.565 and once they retuned we were all hearing the
fox. This time I hid it under third base and it was soon discovered.

If it's this warm next time I'll bring my shorts and rollerblades.

We spent the rest of our lunch hour trying to find it hidden in the branch
of a tree just off the hiking path. We all agreed that up close hunting can
be challenging, and I'm looking forward to introducing RARA to the sport at
their picnic.
