October 2001 Vol.11 no.10 |

It is pouring rain as I write today. Much needed rain. Our mail trail has been without puddles for one of the longest periods of time in nearly 30 years. In
spite of the lack of rain in the last month, the week of the 7th grade
Deboullie Mountain trip was a wet one. They were unable to climb the mountain
because of slippery conditions. They hiked on the ridge loop trail instead.
I hiked with them over that scenic trail on Friday Sept. 26th. One
of the students developed asthma after a few steep climbs. The game warden-parent,
Kenneth Jandreau, hiking with us volunteered to take her back to
where the bus dropped us off. After they left, I realized they would not
get back to the bus before it left the drop off. With my pocket sized
Yaesu VX-5 I called on Rocky Mountain (147.715-) the next time we were
up high. N1JHD answered me. It took awhile, with the moving of Gil's beams
and me climbing a bit higher, but I finally got the message to him to call
Fort Kent and have them call Norman, the bus driver at Deboullie to pick
up the stricken student. Norman got the message and drove from the pick-up
place back to the drop-off place, thus saving a long wait for the warden
and the girl.

It seems to me that now is the time for me to pursue vigorously the establishment of a ham radio program in the Fort Kent Schools. I have on hand "The Proceedings of the ARRL National Educational Workshop July 2001", a book filled with ideas, that will help any one willing to help with this project. I also have 50 of " Archie's Ham Radio Adventure" comics. N7GLR has an antenna that can be used. Gary Stevens is checking with maintenance about mounting the antenna. AA1CN has said in the past that he would help if an antenna were set up. I will be talking to him soon. If ham radio is going to have a future, we must get the young involved and started in this wonderful hobby of ours. N1UYA , Gale Address

In Attendance: N1UYA, N1PMS, N7GLR, KA7VNR Secretary's Minutes: Minutes reviewed, but not read. Treasurer's Report: August Balance: $169.04+.56 INT.=$169.60 Have you paid your dues yet? We need you as a member to continue our ARRL Affiliation and to continue the work of the club. Old Business:
146.640 Repeater: We are getting good signal reports from Presque Isle, however there are places in Fort Kent where acess to the repeater is marginal. Those present discussed again the relative non-use of 146-640-. Is it worth the expense to keep it going? Maybe this is a case of Use It or Lose It! But seriously, we have not given up on the idea of relocating the repeater to Fort Kent, but we still need a tower to do that!

New Business: N1UYA
discussed the ham radio role during the 7th grade trip in the Deboullie
area. She said this would be the perfect time to push for a ham radio school
program. N7GLR has a tri-band 10,15,20 meter antenna he will give to the
school. N7GLR suggested getting some Archie Comic Books from the ARRL.
(Archie's Ham Radio Adventure).
N7GLR has been suggested that we look into putting up a "HAM 146.640-" sign. I have seen a similar sign in St. Quentin, NB. Those present decided to have a Harvest Get Together instead of the November meeting. (See below) Program: We watched part of the
ARRL video "Amateur Radio in the Elementary School". The audio quality
was poor. We would not want to show it at school, but there are some presentation
ideas that will be helpful.
Next meeting: TUESDAY. Dec.4, 6:30, Grindle Conf. Rm. UMFK Submitted by: N1UYA |

FCC REGISTRATION NUMBER MANDATORY IN DECEMBER Starting Dec. 3, 20001, anybody doing business
with the FCC must have an FRN. This is a 10 digit number assigned
by CORE---the Commission Registration System. N1UYA has had an FRN
for several months. However, the FCC on line system is not what is known
as user friendly. A recent attempt to file an application for a vanity
call sign resulted in circular action for a couple of hours every day.
A paper form was acquired from the ARRL, when they told N1UYA, it would
be much easier. Registering for an FRN was NOT difficult.
|
The web address for finding out more: www.fcc.gov/ Then click on Commission Regulation System. This will tell you how the on-line filing system works and how to register for your FRN. CAN
