March 2000 Vol.10 no.3 |
|
Dear Fellow Hams, As I write this on St. Patrick's Day, the temperature is dropping into the teens on a sunny afternoon. It may be below zero tonight, so I guess we have a way to go, even though Spring will have arrived on the calendar by the time you read this. Happy Spring! The chickadees think it is Spring. Early every morning they are whistling their two-note spring songs with enthusiasm. The 8th annual Can-Am Crown Sled Dog Races have been completed. Thanks to the many hams who helped the communications work. The Rocky Mountain Repeater once again enabled the remote checkpoints to communicate with net control and with each other when necessary. There was some interference that came in from Quebec on the tail of our transmissions, but it was a minor problem. N1ZHR covered the Wallagrass Lake Checkpoint. WA1YNZ and KA1CQX took care of Portage. KC1SE had the help of KA1OOW at Rocky Brook. N1HSQ and KA1HEL were at Maibec, and N1QMC and N1ZHQ were at Allagash. Starts of the 250 and 60 were covered by N1UYA and the 30 mile start was covered by N1QMC and N1ZQH. N1JHD and N1ZBX helped with the setups in St. Francis and Allagash. Control Center was operated by N8VJM, who set all the radio and computer gear up in control center, N1PMS, KW1C, N1JHT, N1FCV, and

KA1VTW. WA1ZQH was prepared
to help, but was not needed because the net was closed soon after he
reported to control center.
Many thanks to all of you, who devoted a great many hours to this "Iditarod of the East". We receive many compliments for the way the Can-Am Crown Sled Dog Races are run, yet we always seek to improve. Elections were held at the March Meeting. Once again you have voted me in as president. I look back to my letter of a year ago, and find that one of my goals has not been met. We are still at a standstill on the school project. I hope by the end of the school year we can have presented some program to the schools. N7GLR has offered to put on such a program. The next step is to contact the schools for scheduling and the ARRL for ideas. 73, N1UYA Address
