Letter From Our President

Dear Fellow Hams,
Summer is officially here today, June 21! What a beautiful day it is, too. Blue sky, bright sun,  and green landscape colored by flowers, butterflies and birds.
If you are headed into the woods, remember the club's Rocky Mountain Repeater at 146.715 is in operation. I talked to someone at Priestly Bridge just the other day. We can also hear N1HSQ, Dean, at Allagash Lake from time to time. He gets in very clearly at times, but has no audio at other times.
The Mosely antenna is still not up, but I did separate all the small parts, bag them, and label them so that when I tackle the assembly it should go smoothly. The coax is here, too. Now I just need to build up my confidence and plunge ahead!
At our June meeting, we discussed the apparent lack of interest in meetings and activities, and whether or not it is  worthwhile to have field day for so few people. Field day is practice for setting up in an emergency. When an emergency strikes, it is important for people to know what they are doing. The more people who participate in field day, the better we will be at responding to a call for emergency communications. Though it takes work, it is fun! Join us!

This small club has struggled  since its beginning, as you will see if you read old Feed-Points.  One of our officers stated that people just don't care. However, considering our small membership, maybe we are actually doing quite well. We have asked repeatedly for suggestions and ideas to make the the club of more interest to you. One suggestion at the meeting was that we hold meetings less frequently. Another was that we need to move ahead with a school project. We must find some equipment to go ahead with this. If any of you have unused equipment you would be willing to lend to a school project please let us know.

June 19 and 20 Kid's Field Day was held. Listening in on 20 meters I was impressed by the number of under -10 kids who sounded like old pros on the air! I did not find out about this until a week  ago. I announced it on the net, but
there were only two check-ins! Next year
it would be good if we could invite youngsters to operate on Kid's Field Day.

Minutes of June SVARA Meeting

Called to Order: 18:43 by N1UYA

In Attendance: N1UYA, N1CHF,  KW1C, N1PMS, N1JHD, N1QMC, N8VJM, N1CGV.

Secretary's Minutes: Motion to dismiss by  N1PMS, seconded by N1QMC.  Motion passed.

Treasurer's Report (N1CHF):  balance reported as $429.23 as of last meeting (official); +$.83 (interest); +$36.00 (dues); +-$8.00 (donation); $474.06 (current balance).  Motion to accept by N8VJM, second by N1PMS, passed.

Old Business: KW1C expressed concern over lack of attendance at meetings and over club participation in general.  General discussion was held and consensus was that we should recruit more members.  Consensus also held that we would be able to conduct field day without difficulty even in light of some logistical problems (exempli gratis, the tent).

N8VJM read a letter that he wrote to UMFK staff officially requesting use of facilities and equipment, as-well-as inviting the Y2K committee.

N1UYA will talk to N1BTP regarding the school project.

New Business: Discussion was held about the summer net time and consensus held that it was acceptable.
Further discussion also held that we should have a summer get together or picnic in August.

N1CHF raised the issue of the weather station donated for use on Rocky
Mountain by KC1SE.  New cups are needed for the wind speed measurment
device at a cost of about $16.00(?).  Motion to buy cups by N8VJM, seconded by KW1C, motion passed.

Next meeting:  MON July 12 1830 EST at UMFK, Grindle Conference Room.

Adjourned @ 1946 EDT by N1UYA with no objection from the floor.

Submitted by N8VJM, secretary.

Club members need to think about what they want the club to do for them and what they want to do for the club. Perhaps we ought to devote the next meeting to the "Future of the SJVARA". Think about it. Come to the meeting, so we can decide our future together. If you can't come to the meeting, at least let us know what your are thinking. For such a small group of people, I think we accomplish a lot, and I salute those who devote their time and energy to ham radio in the valley in many ways.

 Good News For N1CGV
N1CHF and N1CGV are rejoicing in the kidney transplant Cheryl received on June 19th. Steve reported that though Cheryl was in pain  after the transplant she said, " I'm so happy!" He thinks she already feels better than perhaps she ever has. We are happy for Cheryl, too. We sent  a bouquet of flowers to her  in Portland from the SJVARA. We wish her a smooth recovery period and look forward to having her back with us.

INNOVATIVE MILESTONES

In July of l924 QST reported that "A South American Does It!" CB8 captured the world DX record by working New Zealand 2AC, with a 6,4000 mile contact  on121 meters with no pre arrangement and lasted for two hours!
The QST July 1949 cover showed the Podunk Hollow Radio Club members heading home following Field Day--dog-tired and in need of shaves.  Sgt. J. R. Hermann, W8SFX described his ham exploits in Germany. He built a 20 meter wire beam on a large kite shaped wooden framework, raised it into the air on the ladder of a German fire department truck. It looked crazy but it worked great! Also Amateur Radio Teletype history was made when JA3RO made the first US-Japan and US-Hawaii RTTY contacts. The operators were three members of the US occupation forces in Japan: KH6LP, W6ITH (a well known DXer) and W7JCU.

In July of 1974 WB2BCY told about a "Poor Man's Electronic Tower Hoist". He used an electric drill for motive power!!!
In the July 1999 issue of QST is the wonderful story of how Dad Brian Wruble, W3BW, bribed his 9 year old Zane daughter with a Princess Diana Beanie Baby Bear.  When Zane asked to use some her savings to purchase the expensive rare bear, Dad said he would buy it if she would get a ham radio license. She got the bear and began to study with lots of help from Dad. She started in May. On June 15 she passed her Novice written, and on Sept. 21, her Technician. In Nov. Zane requested a call sign Dad had held , W1HIC.
Hooked on hamming, Zane negotiated with her Dad for a Spice Girls Doll in exchange for learning Morse Code. On Dec. 21, Zane passed her 13wpm Test.  On January 25, this young lady passed the General and Advanced tests. The next weekend she called CQ on 20 and got a pile-up. Dad did the logging and said it was the most fun he ever had as a ham and he is still processing QSL's!
On February 15 Zane passed the Amateur Extra written test. The examiner asked if she would like to try the 20 wpm. She took it and passed, even though she had not done code for six weeks.  In 300 days this little gal, with the help of Dad,  got all the way to the top!!!!!!!!
     An inspiriation to us all!
