June 1998 Vol.8 No.6
Letter From Our President
Dear Fellow Hams,
Happy Summer! It's officially here, and we hope it will be a nice one. Make the most of it to do any antenna or tower work. Cold weather will be here again all too soon!
Netherlands has closed in Fort Kent, and at the same time I have acquired a copier. As long as that copier holds up, I'll be able to print the newsletters.
We've had quite a bit of rain and the vegetation is growing incredibly fast. N1CHF, KC1SE, and N8VJM made a trip up to Rocky Mountain on June 13th. KC1SE cut down a tree leaning across the trail. N1CHF expressed surprise at the amount of plant material that had grown up in the trail since our cutting trip on May 23rd. Growth is the habit of plants, especially in damp weather! The workers did some paint scraping, and removed three windows that are being repaired by KA1ZOE. They removed the ROCKY sign to move it to another side of the tower (to make room for the solar panel), but the sign contained some rotten wood which they are replacing before replacing the sign. There was a lot of clean-up to do, and trash to be carried out. They also took down an old antenna that was bent. Thanks to them for that day of work.

Rocky Mountain
Update: KA1ZOE has made a substantial looking, well-insulated box to house the two batteries. N1CHF and N8VJM have made a new hatch cover for the tower.
Know anyone who wants to strengthen their leg muscles carrying gear up Rocky Mountain? Some students training for something? Speak up if you do. We still have to get the equipment up the trail and the tower. Hopefully, we'll have to face that challenge soon. N1HSQ is still struggling to get into .64 and only makes it about once a week.

Old Business
Correction of e-mail addresses including Gil Bourgoin as being GILBO1@nci1.net. KC1SE suggested a membership list on the club web page. N1CHF questions the feasibility of possibly of sending the text of the newsletter in e-mail as an alternative to just announcing that it is on the web page.. Hard copy of the newsletter is still available.
Rocky Mountain workday was a success as reported by N1UYA. She also reported discovering a plant previously unseen by her in Aroostook County: Squashberry (Viburnum edule). N1CHF showed repeater equipment, discussed the solar panel test, cabinet, antennae, 220 control and other related issues. He also reported that we still need to do minor trail work, hatch repair, painting and puttying. Distance by road to base camp is 46 miles and to the tower by air (per GPS) is 33 miles. Next work parties tentatively set for MON 18 JUN and SAT 13 JUN. Pictures of the site were shown and will be on the web page.
Field Day discussion was started by KW1C. N8VJM will check on tables, porta
potty, burgers, hot-dogs, buns, charcoal, grills and signs @UMFK. By general
agreement, antennae will start being set at 0800 EDT SAT 27 JUN. N1CGV made a
list of people who agreed to bring food. Other issues discussed included
flagging tape, sign-in book, and publicity. Take down will be at 1400 SUN 28
JUN.
N8VJM told the story of the indemnification and lease arrangements for Rocky
Mountain.
