The Official Newsletter of the St. John Valley Amateur Radio Association

July 1998 Vol.8 No.7 Letter From Our President

Dear Fellow Hams,

As I write it feels a bit like fall. It's a welcome change from the heat and humidity of the last few days. I have heard that DX contacts have been excellent on some evenings. We'd like to hear about your favorite DX contacts at the next meeting!

Summer is a busy time for everyone, so I'll keep this newsletter as short as possible!

We've had a couple of big events since the last newsletter. Field Day was enjoyable for all who participated. Pleasant weather helped, too. We had two radios set up, and 20 meters turned out to be the best band all day and all night. Miles made a lot of contacts after midnight and when he woke me at 02:00, told me things were really hopping. In the next two hours I made 40 contacts with less of a wait than during the day. It was easier to be heard through the pile ups. The night was a bit chilly, and I had two companions that apparently enjoyed the relative warmth of the big tent--a moth with tufts on its back, and a stonefly. Jessica came in before 07:00 to take over. Jessica made a lot of contacts both days. The hams not on HF regularly yet, including myself, really get excited about making distant contacts. Encouragement for the future! Steve (N1CHF) brought a little fox and some tried fox hunting.

Thanks to everyone who helped make Field Day a success. Marty, Miles, Gil Daigle, Steve, Peter, Jim, John (AA1CN), and Jeff all had a hand with transporting everything to Crocker Beach and/or setting up and taking down, or working on the generator or antennas. Cheryl, and Sandra were busy with food and the publicity table, as well as making lots of contacts for us. Charlie (N1FRX) joined for a while, too.????N1JHT

Our meeting on July 13th at the home of KC1SE was a most pleasant experience. Jim and Margaret put out a lovely feast for us and we thank them for their hospitality. Jim topped the meal off with a cake inscribed "St. John Valley Amateur Radio Association" and ice-cream. We all think it should become an annual event!

Rocky Mountain

Update: KA1ZOE has made a substantial looking, well-insulated box to house the two batteries. N1CHF and N8VJM have made a new hatch cover for the tower.

Know anyone who wants to strengthen their leg muscles carrying gear up Rocky Mountain? Some students training for something? Speak up if you do. We still have to get the equipment up the trail and the tower. Hopefully, we'll have to face that challenge soon. N1HSQ is still struggling to get into .64 and only makes it about once a week.

Next Meeting

Monday, August 3 at 6:30 PM

Minutes of July SJVARA Meeting

Called to order @ 19:09 EDT by N1UYA.

In attendance: N1FRX, N1CGV, N1ZHR, N8VJM, N1PMS, KW1C, KC1SE, N1CHF, N1UYA, N7GLR, KA7VNR, Barbara, Margaret

Motion to dispense with the reading of the minutes was made by N1CGV, second by N1FRX. Motion passed.

Treasurer's report: previous balance $925.04, -$8.30 (food), +24.00 (dues), -$58.17 (battery box), +1.24 (interest), -$22.47 (hardware), -$65.00 (toilet), $59.00 (food at John's), +$12 (dues), +$41.95 (antenna/N1UYA), -$125.90 (batteries), -$43.36 (copies, food, postage). New balance:$321.08. Motion to accept by N8VJM, second by N1PMS. Motion passed.

Old Business: N1UYA thanked KW1C, club officers, and members for a successful field day. KW1C reported that we amassed 684 points before any bonuses and a good time was had by all. He went on to say that we had great success on 20M, but other clubs had success on 10M, and we have previously had success on other bands (food for thought). Two citations were received for being within 3KHz of the band edge, so next year's contact logs will have the absolute band limits posted.

N1CHF reported on Rocky Mountain progress. It was reported that Arnold Martin was pleased with our road work. Antenna mounts have been made, antennae assembled, frame welded and sandblasted, battery box built, cables modified, and good progress was being made on all fronts.

New Business: Rocky Mountain work days were discussed, with no final plans being made. July 18th a target date with another soon after.

Consensus was that there would be no summer picnic due to the meal at field day and this picnic meeting at KC1SE's house.

We need a new meeting place as the old S.P.R.E.D. building has been sold. Zizi complimented us as tenants there. Options discussed were UMFK, the new S.P.R.E.D. building, C.H.S., town hall, NMMC.

Next meeting is tentatively set for Mon 3 Aug 98, location unknown.

Adjourned by N1UYA @ 20:00 EDT with no objection from the floor

Two new members were voted in, Charles and Ruth, N7GLR and KA7VNR. (Editor's note: They live in Grand Falls. They came to Crocker Beach during the take-down of field day. They had gotten stuck in the Acadian Parade in Madawaska.. Welcome to Charles and Ruth.)

Submitted by N8VJM, secretary.
