July 2001 Vol.11 no.7 |
|
July has been wet! We went from 3 1/2" below normal precipitation to 1/4" above normal for the season with more than 5 inches of rain. Temperatures continue to see-saw from very hot to quite cold. In spite of all this, I hope you are all having a nice summer. All the rain has caused growth of vegetation and that means we need some volunteers to trim out the Rocky Mountain road and trail. Pruners, brush saw and chain saw might all be needed. The trail needs to be cleared so that new equipment can be set up on the top of the mountain. Please contact me if you are willing to assist in this, or are willing to take it over and get a crew to the area. I will be away in St. Pierre -et- Miquelon Aug. 18th to Aug. 28th. Field Day went well, with KW1C's good organization, KC1SE's good throwing arm for putting antennas into trees, and N1CHF and N1JHD's contribution of gear and generator work. A tent was rented from Lakeview again. It seemed quite leaky during the downpours of Saturday night, but the three radios were kept dry. Thanks to KA1ZOE, and KW1C for the rigs we used. The third one came from me, N1UYA. A lot of contacts were made, but I don't have the final figures. N1CGV talked to some Russians. Thanks to all who took part. |
N1UYA was on
from 23:30 to 7:30 AM, accompanied by a pet dragon fly nymph. The nymph
was well fed during the night, as many insects were attracted to the light
in the tent. The nymph survived two canoe trips and field day, and, after
a nine day fast starting July 2nd, emerged as a large brown dragonfly with
yellow thoracic stripes. A Shadow Darner. I am sure he covered more miles
than any other nymph!

In Attendance: N1UYA, N1PMS Secretary's Minutes: Treasurer's Report: Have you paid your dues yet? Old Business: Rocky Mountain: It still may be necessary to press any single tone to activate the repeater, and each time after the ID, depending on conditions. The solar controller is doing well in its testing. Proposed Member: AH8T, Ricky Martin, has contacted me. He says he will keep up with us via the web page. He wishes to support out club by paying dues, as he likes to do with many clubs. I thanked him for his support. |
There were only two of us present, so there was no meeting. Instead, Peter and I arranged to give a young boy a chance to operate. I took my little Yaesu to Lucas Woodward. I explained how the mike worked. He then contacted N1PMS . Lucas talked like a pro. Lucas visited on Field Day and was quite excited by the operations. Perhaps we can encourage him to get a license. We definitely need new hams.

an improved antenna. If you have not tried it recently, try it. Those of you in Madawska should get into it better now. Some people in town in Fort Kent are having a more difficult time getting in. There is no new news about a permanent site in Fort Kent
at present.

There was a time when a call on .64 would bring a response. During the last two weeks I have not been able to raise anyone one on .64, .52, or .55. Sunday Aug. 29 I tried repeatedly on all the frequencies for someone to make a phone call to report our dead telephone. No response. I wonder if hams passing through the area are getting the same result. Is anybody scanning any more? Any suggestions about what we can do about this? |

* Have you ever wondered why nobody ever disappears into thick air?. * Isn't a "near miss" actually a collision? * If something is "neither here nor there", where is it? * When two planes get into a "midair collision", is that somewhere between low and upper air?. |
