St. Louis Offenders of The Faith

Here's a list of St. Louis media outlets (AM, FM and TV) that have never broadcast in Stereo or once broadcast in Stereo (but dropped it for absolutely no reason).

St. Louis AM Offenders

KTRS-550 St. Louis, MO: Sadly, this station made the stupidest move yet: flipping off their Stereo exciter for good in February of 2001. Until that time, the station broadcast in simulated AM Stereo since The Dorsey Group acquired the station from Infinity Broadcasting in 1997. In other words, it was sending out the Stereo pilot, but the audio feed was mono. In mono with the Stereo exciter on, the sound quality was much better than their rival, KMOX-1120. Now, with the Stereo exciter off, the sound is more distorted. As KSD (AM), it was still in REAL AM Stereo even during the Adult Standards days of 1995, and the brief midday Classic Rock show (providing a break from it's all-News format) in 1994, hosted by Mark Klose.  To complain about this stupid decision, write to KTRS Radio, Attention: Chief Engineer, 638 West Port Plaza, St. Louis,  MO 63146.

KFNS-590 Wood River, IL: This station broadcast in AM Stereo when the station was running an Easy Listening format, and later, simulcasting the Soft Adult Contemporary format of their FM sister station at the time (both as KEZK). The Stereo has only been fired up occasionally since the station went all-Sports in 1993, following the demise of KASP-1380. The Stereo hasn't been activated, however, since the station carried the Rams games in the 1998 season.

KWRE-730 Warrenton, MO: Despite it's fine Classic Country format, the station has never broadcast in AM Stereo. Suggestions of AM Stereo submitted to CE Steve Rotz (KA0KAZ) fell on deaf ears. Address your letters to: 73 KWRE, Attention: Steve Rotz, P.O. Box 220, Warrenton, MO 63383.

WEW-770 St. Louis, MO: While the bulk of it's schedule still revolves around music, it was more of their financial situation in the mid-1980s that have kept them from broadcasting in AM Stereo. That same financial condition kept the station from having a daytime power increase (from 1 kW to 10 kW) and the addition of 500-watt night service in the mid-1980s. Letters can be sent to: 77 WEW, Attention: Rich Vannoy, General Manager, 2740 Hampton Ave., St. Louis, MO 63139.

KFUO-850 Clayton, MO: Despite carrying some music programming, the oldest Christian station in the St. Louis market (dating back to 1924) still won't go AM Stereo. KFUO (AM) has never broadcast in AM Stereo, despite the fact that KFUO-FM (the oldest FM station in St. Louis) broadcasts in FM Stereo. KFUO (AM) has also made the fatal mistake of broadcasting in the unproven and spectrally inefficient IBOC-DAB system. Letters can be sent to: KFUO (AM), Attention: Dennis Stortz, 85 Founders Lane, St. Louis, MO 63105.

WCBW-880/WDID-1510 Highland, IL: While New Life Evangelistic Center's FM stations are broadcasting in FM Stereo, it's AM stations are not (and should be broadcasting in Stereo). Despite rumors that WINU-1510 went Stereo, it never did (this was when it was still WCBW). Letters can be sent to: New Life Evangelistic Center, P.O. Box 473, St. Louis, MO 63166.

WGNU-920 Granite City, IL: This station is still not broadcasting in AM Stereo, despite having some music programming on the air. Letters can be sent to: WGNU Radio, Attention: Charles Geer, 265 Union Blvd., Suite 1315, St. Louis, MO 63108.

KXEN-1010 Festus, MO: This station broadcast in AM Stereo during nighttime hours from 1998 to 2004; despite the fact the station still airs some music programming, KXEN turned off their nighttime AM Stereo service for no reason. Let management know of their illogical decision to frop AM Stereo at P.O. Box 8085, Mitchell, IL 62040.

WRYT-1080 Edwardsville, IL: This station has never broadcast in AM Stereo. Some music programming is aired on this all-Catholic station. Stereo has been dropped from sister station WOLG (95.9 FM) in Carlinville, IL. Letters can be sent to: Covenant Network, Attention: Tony Holman, 3515 Hampton Ave., St. Louis, MO 63139.

KMOX-1120 St. Louis, MO: In April of 2000, "The Voice of St. Louis" made the stupid, illogical, unwise decision to drop AM Stereo operations after 12 years. Director of Technical Operations Paul Grundhauser gave the reasons as a "declining number of AM Stereo receivers in the marketplace" (Come off it, Paul...there are over 24 million AM Stereo receivers out there, an estimated 500,000 in St. Louis alone), "improving the sound" (KMOX's sound has been dull and lifeless, I won't even listen to Cardinals games anymore, unless I can pick it up on an out-of-town signal or on FM), and "it was a business decision" (how much good will it be when they start losing listeners to KWMU, 90.7 FM or KFTK, 97.1 FM?). KMOX still runs "I Love Jazz" with Don Wolff on Saturday night/Sunday morning (2200-0200 Central U.S. time), which makes the decision to drop AM Stereo even more illogical. The station now threatens to become an IBOC Offender. If management cannot be reasoned with at 1 Memorial Drive, St. Louis, MO 63102, then you may write the main office of Infinity Broadcasting/CBS Radio in New York, NY.

WSDZ-1260 Belleville, IL: This ABC o&o, which runs Radio Disney, once broadcast in AM Stereo (as WIBV) in 1989. When the station dropped music in 1989, Belleville Broadcasting turned off the Stereo. Radio Disney stations in Chicago, Dallas/Fort Worth and Los Angeles broadcast in AM Stereo, why not WSDZ? This station is looking at the possibility of moving from Belleville, IL to St. Peters, MO. Ask that WSDZ's move to St. Peters includes AM Stereo. Write to the General Manager of WSDZ at 639 West Port Plaza, St. Louis, MO 63146, or to Radio Disney's main office at 3321 South La Cienega Blvd., Los Angeles, CA 90016.

KSIV-1320 Clayton, MO: This Bott o&o has never broadcast in AM Stereo, despite the fact that their FM, on 91.5 in St. Louis (formerly KSLH) broadcasts in Stereo. Most of the religious programs aired on KSIV (both AM and FM) are recorded in Stereo. If you would like to see KSIV (AM) broadcast in Stereo, write to the station's General Manager at 1750 South Brentwood Blvd, Suite 811, St. Louis, MO 63144.

KSLG-1380 St. Louis, MO: This station, which carries ESPN Sports Radio, has never gone Stereo. As all-Oldies KGLD, the station made plans to go Stereo in the late 1980s, before KLOU came on the air. This frequency went to all-sports in 1991, CHR in 1993, syndicated talk in 1995, CHR in 1996, Hot Country in 1997, free-form talk in February 1998, mainstream Jazz in July 1998, Southern Gospel in December 1999 before adopting their current all-sports format. They never went Stereo while they were simulcasting WKBQ-FM ("Q-104", now WMLL) or WKKX ("Kix 106.5", now WARH). This station has been through these calls since dropping KWK in 1984: KGLD, KASP, WKBQ, KRAM, WKBQ (again), KKWK and KZJZ. If you would like to see KSLG go Stereo, write to the Station Manager at the station's last-known address, which is: 5261 Delmar Blvd., St. Louis, MO 63130.

WIL-1430 St. Louis, MO: Despite it's fine Classic Country format, featuring Johnny Rabbitt in the morning, this station is missing one key ingredient: AM Stereo. If you would like to see WIL (AM) go Stereo, write to Country Legends 1430, Attention: Ron Elz, , St. Louis, MO 63141. (Note: This station has been sold to Bonneville Broadcasting Company, you may also write to Bonneville at their Salt Lake City headquarters.)

KHOJ-1460 St. Charles, MO: This station was once listed as broadcasting in AM Stereo in the 1989 National Religious Broadcasters (NRB) Station Guide (probably Kahn AM Stereo). This station programmed predominantly music on the schedule, Urban Gospel days/evenings and all day Sunday, and mainstream jazz overnights. The station now features an all-Catholic format. If you would like to see KHOJ go Stereo, write to Covenant Network, Attention: Tony Holman, 3515 Hampton Avenue, St. Louis, MO 63139.

WESL-1490 East St. Louis, IL: After 21 years of broadcasting in AM Stereo, the station has been acquired by Simmons Communications, owners of KSLG (1380 AM), and is the latest to make the illogical choice of turning off their AM Stereo signal (in May 2005), despite the fact the station still runs a predominantly music-oriented format (in this case, Classic Soul). If you would like to tell the management of WESL your displeasure with their dropping AM Stereo service, contact the General Manager at 149 South 8th Street, East St. Louis, IL 62201.

WBGZ-1570 Alton, IL: "Z-1570" still carries some music programming, but has never broadcast in AM Stereo. It's 74-watt night power covers much of Alton and Godfrey. If you would like to see WBGZ go Stereo, write to: WBGZ Radio, Attention: Sam Stemm, 227 Market Street, Alton, IL 62002.

KATZ-1600 St. Louis, MO: This station has never broadcast in AM Stereo. Now owned by Clear Channel Communications, known for their lame excuses for not converting ANY of their AM stations to Stereo. The station broadcasts Urban Gospel music and St. Louis Rams football, both of which are in Stereo. You may try writing to KATZ's Chief Engineer at 10155 Corporate Square, St. Louis, MO 63132, but you could be better off complaining about their anti-AM Stereo (and monopolistic) policies at the FCC, 1919 M Street N.W., Washington, DC 20554.

St. Louis FM Offenders

Believe it or not, all of the FM stations in St. Louis are broadcasting in Stereo. KRHS 90.1, the last holdout, finally went Stereo in December 2001. However, there is one offender in the outer 'burbs:

WOLG (95.9 FM) Carlinville, IL: This station began life as country music station WCNL, broadcasting in FM Stereo. In 1998, the station was acquired by Covenant Network, and switched to an all-Catholic format. The station made the mistake of dropping Stereo in the process. The address for WOLG is the same as WRYT (AM) and KHOJ (AM).

St. Louis TV Offenders

All TBN stations in the St. Louis area: The Trinity Broadcasting Network owned-and-operated stations, now operating on UHF Channel 33 in St. Louis and UHF Channel 22 in St. Charles, has never converted it's low-power television stations to Stereo. If you would like to see all TBN stations broadcast in Stereo, write to: Trinity Broadcasting Network, Post Office Box A, Santa Ana, CA 92711.

KNLC Channel 24 St. Louis, MO: The flagship of the New Life Evangelistic Center's TV empire, this station (and sister station KNLJ-25 Jefferson City, MO), while having carried programming from UPN and Fox Kids in the St. Louis market, along with Fox Kids and Kids WB in the Columbia/Jefferson City market in the past (which have been revoked because of concerns over evangelization), NLEC has never bothered converting it's TV stations to Stereo. If you would like to see KNLC broadcast in Stereo, write to: KNLC Channel 24, Attention: Rev. Larry Rice, P.O. Box 924, St. Louis, MO 63188.

K28IK Channel 28 St. Louis, MO: This all-Catholic television station, which has previously operated on UHF Channels 62 and 69, has never broadcast in Stereo. The station went 24 hours in 1995 when it affiliated with the EWTN Global Catholic Network.

WRBU Channel 46 East St. Louis, IL: This station has never broadcast in Stereo, despite it's affiliation with Home Shopping Network. Because of a lawsuit it lost with HSN, WHSL has been passed over for general entertainment network programming. The station switched to UPN on April 1, 2003, moving HSN to KPTN-LP Channel 58 (that station is now off the air). The conversion of the most powerful UHF station in St. Louis (5,000,000 watts video, 500,000 watts audio) to Stereo may be possible. If you would like to see WRBU go Stereo (or if they already are, congratulate the owners), write to WRBU/UPN 46, Attention: Stephen Roberts, 1408 North Kingshighway, St. Louis, MO 63113.

KUMO-LP Channel 51 St. Louis, MO/WPXS Channel 13 Mount Vernon, IL: This translator and it's main station, owned and operated by Equity Broadcasting Company, has never broadcast in Stereo. In 2004, the stations dropped PaxTV programming, and briefly ran Daystar programming before becoming independent.

K64DT Channel 64 St. Louis, MO: The local Daystar o&o has never broadcast in Stereo.
