Hello everyone,

Yesterday evening I met with Gary Allen the race director for the new MDI
Marathon; a 26.2 mile race around MDI taking place on October 20, 2002.  I
am interested in hearing from hams that would like to volunteer at this event.
The race starts at 0800 but setup for us will be starting at 0500.  We can use
the help of as many hams as possible. I envision a net control station at the
finish in SW Harbor.  Other radio operators will be stationed at the starting line
in Bar Harbor and each of the first aid stations along the course.  Radio
operators will be aboard the sweep buses that will be picking up those that
drop out.  Ham operators will also be located at key intersections along the
course.  The police will handle traffic control.  Our job will be to assist the Race
Director with managing the race.

The Race Board of Directors is willing to make a $100 donation to us as a sign
off their appreciation.  This could be used to offset expenses at next year's field
day.  If you are interested in volunteering I need you to do a couple of things.

First, drop me an email at lobsta@midmaine.com  and let me know.  If you
can only work part of the day tell me and I'll schedule you to work at the starting
area.  I need folks that can make a day of it at least until 1530 or so.

Second, surf on over to mdimarathon.org/volform.html and complete the
form.  In the comments section enter Amateur Radio Operator.  You do not
need to select the activity you want to volunteer at.  Gary is letting us divvy up
the work load.  Don't forget to check of your shirt size so that I can get you a
shirt.

This is a perfect opportunity for us in the amateur radio community to show our
worth.  Trust me, running in a marathon is an event of a lifetime and I can only
imagine that managing a marathon is also an event of a lifetime.  Let's all pitch
in and help Gary out. Don't forget that our own Deb Hubbard will be running the
race as well as.

Please don't hesitate to call me at home (565-3439) or catch up with me on the
radio.

Respectfully yours,
Ross Lane
