Garn Boduan NW-066

Garn Boduan, GW/NW-066 - 279m ASL - SH 312 393 - OS Explorer 253 - 1 SOTA point         Map & summit information from SOTAwatch

This summit was activated on Saturday 17th July 2004, by myself, accompanied by Jimmy and Liam.

The next summit was Garn Boduan GW/NW-066, standing south of the village of Nefyn.   Heading NW away from Carn Fadryn GW/NW-058, we turned right onto the A497 and then left onto the B4354, pulling in by the start of the path SH 315 387 where there is room for 4 or 5 cars.  The path is actually a wide forest ride, one of several that wind their way up and down this side of the hill.  Only one of them is a designated PROW however, but it was straightforward to stick to it by checking with the map.

At the summit, we found one of our favourite treats - a summit shelter hollowed out of a large cairn.  It was not as deep or impressive as the one that sits atop Yr Eifl GW/NW-075, but still gave me a comfortable seat, kept me out of the wind and meant that I didn't need to get the guys out of the rucksack.  The first two contacts out of the bag were summit-to-summit Dave MW0DFA/P on Cadair Idris GW/NW-009 and Rick GW0VMW/P who had followed me onto GW/NW-058 Carn Fadryn.  A longer activation ensued, including some 5 watt blasts on 2m SSB towards the West Midlands, but no joy there.  Further summit-to-summits were enjoyed with Alan MW1EYO/P already on his final port of call, Yr Aran GW/NW-019, and Steve GW1INK/P on Moel Hebog GW/NW-014.  The SWL point tactic clicked into gear when I heard Rob GW4RQJ/P on the already-chased GW/NW-058 Carn Fadryn during my descent, but it failed spectacularly a little earlier while still on the summit!   Having earlier worked Alan on Snowdon, I heard Nick GW4FAL/P activating from the highest point in England and Wales.  I jotted down the SWL details and continued with my activation, only to be thwarted when Nick himself answered my QRZ call 20 minutes later!  I happily crossed out my 10 SWL points and replaced them with 0 chaser points, and later found out that Alan had to do something very similar!

We descended down the pleasant tracks as the weather continued to improve towards what we had all instructed Keith to provide for us, unlike the drizzle of the morning.   Halfway down, there was Rick and family halfway up.  Do you ever get the feeling someone is following you?

Thanks to all the following stations worked on this activation, all worked on 2m FM with 500 mW, except EI7IP where 2.5 watts was used:
