Tait T500 Resource Page

The Tait T500 series radios are an excellent choice to modify for use on the amateur bands. They are available in VHF or UHF versions, which are useful for 2m, and 70cms usually. I believe there are some suitable for use on 4m as well, but I have not come across any of these as yet.

They come in two series: Series I, and Series II. The Series II models have some minor enhancements above the Series I, but both are easily modified for ham use. The more common Taits, such as the T530 (VHF Series I) and the T535 (VHF Series II) - both 2m candidates, are two channel, diode matrix programmed radios, and often come complete with dual CTCSS - ie both TX and RX for both channels. These CTCSS boards can usually be utilised for amateur service also. The modifications I have carried out are as follows:

1750Hz Toneburst Addition
Configuring the CTCSS module for amateur use
Multiple Channel Modification
Reversing the direction of the Squelch control
