I bought this transceiver in Fridrichshafen HAM Radio expo 2008. The only difference from the top model IC-7800 is that it doens't have a secondary receiver. The mass and weight is similar. My first rig which has an parameter test report. My first impression was very pleasing, even its packaging was quite expensive. Nothing would happen to it even if it fell off the table. It was packed in a tripple hard carton box with air gaps. The buttons on the control module with long interval pushes allows you to work without the needless browsing though the menu. During the reception the only working cooler is the power supply blower which is still very silent. During the sending period two more PA ones turn on and the antenna tuner ( if its activated ) blower as well. Those blowers can only be heard after an hour in CQ PSK31 mode. There isn't much pick on. The receiver works great right next to powerful signals if they dont seed splatters (it takes up one line if its good, more if it isn't). The panoramic indicator lets you see quite weak signals throughout the band, which you can't do with YAESU FT-2000. The Auto NOTCH function also catches the noise and turns them into very silent clicks. The NOISE REDUCER turns a noisy airing into a clean and pleasant to listen to. Its not even worth talking about the possibilities of the filters, they sound like quartz ones. However this transceiver isn't very reliable. After browsing the internet, I found out that its an ICOM disease. At the moment the standard is so that if your device is not struck by lightning, it won't break. My KENWOOD TS-850SAT has seen plenty of bad antennas and power supplies and nothing happened to it. Running through 50W, while tuning my G5RV dipol antenna with an antenna tuner, the power amplifier's output FET type transistors MRF-150 fried. After a few months I turned on the IC-7700 and touched the big knob. I got an electric shock from the static electricity charge and the Copal's magnetic encoder's comparator LM393 fried. Ignoring the technical disturbances, this transceiver is great if you don't need a secondary receiver.
