MINUTES OF LIDXA INC. MEETING—November 21, 2008

Location: Briarcliffe College, Bethpage, N.Y.

John, W2GW, the LIDXA President, called to order the meeting of October 17 at 8:20 PM.  Members present (per sign-in on the blackboard) included W2GW and XYL K2MAU, KC2OPX, W2FGD, WB2ZHB, K2MFY, N2FF, N2KA, W2VZQ and XYL Marilyn, N2DXJ and XYL Tanis.

OLD BUSINESS

In terms of DX, specific activities were highlighted:

·         Propagation is starting to pick up with good conditions on 20 meters, and brief openings on 17 and 15 meters during the daytime. The solar flux finally started to increase from 67 to 72.

·         A number of DXpeditions are coming up in the next few months; namely, Vietnam, Zambia, T31, etc.

·         Several members reported working the DXpedition to Serrana Bank and San Andres & Providiciales Island as 5KØT.

Starting the business portion of tonight’s meeting was the approval of the October 17 meeting minutes.  Except for a couple of minor corrections, the minutes were accepted as presented.  In addition, the minutes were prepared in advance by K2MFY, and sent out to the membership with the November meeting notice.  Thanks to the efforts of KE2LJ, Pat, the minutes appear in the LIDXA web site at: http://www.qsl.net/lidxa.

W2GW gave the monthly Treasurer’s report. He reminded the membership that the 2009 dues will be due early next year.

John held a brief (free) raffle for a copy of the ARRL book “The Digital Handbook” which was one by Marv, W2FGD.

NEW BUSINESS

A brief discussion then developed on the club’s annual Holiday party.  It is to be held at the Star Diner in Hicksville on Thursday night, December 11 at 6:30PM.  The arrangements would be the same as last year; namely, complete dinner with choice of three entrees for $25 (including tip and tax).  Ed said member/guests should contact him regarding their entrée selection. By a show of hands, it appeared that about 10 members with/without spouses/guests would be attending this dinner.

Members then discussed the forthcoming 2009 Ham Radio University (HRU).  John brought up the club’s continued participation in this forum.  HRU 2009 is scheduled for Sunday, January 11, 2009 at  http://www.hamradiouniversity.org/.  This year we have been allotted about 1-1/2 hours for our “DX Program”–from 10:00 to 11:50AM in Room C.  Members W2GW, W2FGD, K2MFY and Steve, WB2ZHB said they would be available to do presentations.  Ed said he would e-mail John the outline from last years’ topics for review.

Marv, W2FGD, reminded the membership to check-in at the LIDXA weekly nets on Sunday night at 9 PM local time on the Grumman Hauppauge repeater at 145.330/144.730 MHz (with 136.5 Hz PL), to get the latest information on club matters and events.

A video on the May 2000 A52A DXpedition to Bhutan, “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” was shown.  This excellent video not only portrayed the ham radio aspects of this trip, but also presented a remarkable travelogue on this remote country.

This meeting concluded at around 10 PM after all the scheduled business and entertainment had finished.  Since the Holiday party is scheduled for December 11, the next LIDXA meeting would be held on Friday January 16, 2009. John wished the membership a good and happy holiday season.
