MINUTES OF LIDXA INC. MEETING — September 11, 2009

Location: Area outside Briarcliffe College, Bethpage, N.Y.

John, W2GW, the LIDXA President, called to order the meeting of September 11 at 8:10 PM. This meeting was held a week earlier–on the second week of the month.  The regular meeting date, on the third Friday in September, is the start of the Jewish New Year and there will be no meeting.

Unfortunately members who came to the school earlier tonight were informed that the school was not open for our meeting.  It appears with the start of the new school term, Briarcliffe College will not be having classes on Friday nights and hence the school will not open for any activities.

A good part of this meeting, which was held outside the locked school door, was a discussion on what the LIDXA should do for future meetings.  Since the school is expected to be open on other evenings during the week, it was decided to move the meetings to the third THURSDAY of the week.  The next meeting is scheduled for Thursday night, October 15 at 8PM.  It was hoped that we will have this meeting with no problem in our regular room (Room 10 in the Huntington hallway).

(Since notes were not taken during this informal meeting in the area outside the school by the rear door, please forgive any errors or omissions—Secretary’s comment)

 Members present included W2GW and his XYL K2MAU, W2ABK, W2FGD, KA2D, K2MFY, W2PNJ, N2FF, N2AJ, W2VZQ and XYL Marilyn, N2DXJ and XYL Tanis.

OLD BUSINESS

In terms of DX, specific activities were highlighted:

A DXpedition to Gloriosos Island as FT5GA is expected to be operational for several weeks towards the end of September.  They are expected to be on the island for several weeks.

·         Several members reported receiving 7O1YGF QSLs from the 2000 DXpedition to Yemen by a German group.  After almost ten years the ARRL has finally approved their documentation.  Also confirmations have come over on LOTW.

It was reported that the solar flux is low, but starting to improve, good conditions are found in the early evening on 20 meters and later on 30 meters.  There have been random openings to Europe in the early evenings.

Starting the business portion of tonight’s meeting was the approval of the June 19 meeting minutes.  These minutes were accepted as presented.  In addition, the minutes were prepared in advance by Ed, K2MFY, and sent out to the membership with the September meeting notice.  Thanks to the efforts of KE2LJ, Pat, the minutes appear in the LIDXA web site at: http://www.qsl.net/lidxa.

W2GW gave the monthly Treasurer’s report.  John mentioned that the club’s liability bill will be due soon.  This is the single most expensive allocation for the club.

NEW BUSINESS

John mentioned that he will be using the professional services of W2GD shortly to raise his new antenna assembly.  Ed said he had some tower work to be done in the future and would contact John privately.

Ed mentioned that there was good activity by the Grumman Radio Club from July 16 through July 21 to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the Apollo 11 manned landing on the moon. Over 1300 stations were contacted.  Special certificates will be sent out shortly.  LIDXA members W2ABK and K2MFY are a few of the Grumman club members who participated in the event.

Marv, W2FGD, reminded the membership to check-in at the LIDXA weekly nets on Sunday night at 9 PM local time on the Grumman Hauppauge repeater at 145.330/144.730 MHz (with 136.5 Hz PL), to get the latest information on club matters and events.

The meeting concluded early at around 9:00 PM after all the scheduled business had finished.  The video scheduled for tonight, on the January 2007 DXpedition to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta as 1A4A, was not shown since the DVD player was not accessible.  Also John requested that Ed chair the October 15 meeting since he will be on vacation.  Assuming that Briarcliffe College will be open on that Thursday night for the LIDXA meeting, Ed said he hopes he can get the DVD player from the school and show the video.
