MINUTES OF LIDXA INC. MEETING—September 14, 2007

Location: Briarcliffe College, Bethpage, N.Y.

John, W2GW, the LIDXA President, called to order the meeting of September 14th at 8:15 PM. Members present (per sign-in on the blackboard) included W2GW and XYL K2MAU, KC2OPX, W2VZQ, AB2NT, W2FGD, N2KA, and new member, Bob, W2PNJ.

The club welcomed to the LIDXA our new member, Bob, W2PNJ.

Since the club’s Secretary, Ed, K2MFY could not make tonight’s meeting, Karen, KC2OPX, offered to take the minutes and forward them to Ed for editing and issue.

OLD BUSINESS

In terms of DX, specific activities were highlighted:

  • A DXpedition to St. Brandon Island as 3B7SP is currently very active.  They have a good signal and are active on many bands where we have propagation.  Much of their activity has been on CW.
  • Plans are well underway for a DXpedition to Clipperton Island in March 2008.  For further details look at their website at: www.clipperton2008.org.
  • Preparations are in the works for a new DXpedition to Ducie Island, as VP6DX, for February 2008.  Operations are expected for two week during mid-February.  See www’vp6dx.com for details.
  • With the approach of the Fall equinox, several members reported that conditions on 20 and 17 meters were improving slightly, even though the solar flux numbers are way down.

Starting the business portion of tonight’s meeting was the approval of the June 15th meeting minutes.  These minutes were accepted as presented.  In addition, the minutes were prepared in advance by K2MFY, and sent out to the membership with the September meeting notice.  Thanks to the efforts of KE2LJ, Pat, the minutes appear in the LIDXA web site at: http://www.qsl.net/lidxa.

W2GW gave the monthly Treasurer’s report.  John indicated that about 20 members had paid their dues.  A new roster, as of August 31, was sent to the current membership by W2GW; also K2MFY included it in the meeting announcement.  In order to stay an ARRL-affiliated club, at least 25 members must be part of the club.  The next LIDXA update to the ARRL for club status is required in early 2008.

NEW BUSINESS

It was reported that long-time LIDXA member and past President, Lenny, KB2HK, was recovering from a stroke.  The membership wished Lenny a speedy and healthy recovery.

Marv, W2FGD, stated that Saturday, September 16, the NJDXA would be hosting their annual summer picnic in Parsippany, NJ.  This party is open to many of the DX clubs in the NY/NJ area.

Art, N2KA, was happy to report that he had just received his BS7H, Scarborough Reef QSL card from the manager.

With Pat, KE2LJ, the present LIDXA Vice President, leaving the NYC area for a Florida retirement, John mentioned that we must elect a new club Vice President.  Also since John is now LIDXA President, he recommended that the club also look for an interim Treasurer until the June 2008 full elections.  Pat will still maintain the LIDXA web site.

A DVD was then shown on the November 2006 international DXpedition to Libya as 5A7A.  In order to accomplish this operation the participants had to carry over 1000 pounds of equipment, antenna and cables to the operating positions.  This highly successful DXpedition grossed over 112,000 QSOs on all bands and modes in their two weeks of operation.

This meeting concluded at around 10PM after all the scheduled business and entertainment had finished.  The next LIDXA meeting will be held on Friday October 19, 2007.
