MINUTES OF LIDXA INC. MEETING— April 15, 2005

Location: Briarcliffe College, Bethpage, N.Y.

The meeting of April 15 was called to order at 8:13PM.  Members present (per sign-in on the blackboard) included K2MFY, NN2C, W2FGD, AB2NT, AG2A, W2VZQ, KB2HK, N2ZN, NX2F, WA2RD, KC2KY, W2GW and XYL, KC2MAU, N2DXJ and XYL.

OLD BUSINESS

In terms of DX, specific activities were highlighted:

  • It was mentioned that a number of Hong Kong stations have been worked on 20 meters in the morning around 1200–1300Z.  In particular VR2XMT and VR2IG have been constantly heard on SSB with good signals.
  • A number of stations have been signing with a special call to mark the death of Pope John Paul II.  Members reported working SPØPAPA recently.
  • With high band propagation deteriorating, good openings to the Europe were indicated in the early evening on the low bands of 30, 40 and 80 meters.
  • A station signing A52JO was heard in the morning on 17 meters.  Unfortunately East coast stations had a difficult time getting through due to all the European stations calling.

Starting the business portion of tonight’s meeting was the approval of the March 18 meeting minutes.  These minutes were accepted as presented.  In addition, the minutes were prepared in advance by the club’s secretary, Ed, K2MFY, and sent out to the membership with the March meeting notice.  Thanks to the efforts of KE2LJ, Pat, the minutes appear on the LIDXA web site at: http://www.qsl.net/lidxa.

Club Treasurer, John, W2GW gave the monthly Treasurer’s report.  Dues for the 2005 calendar year are now overdue.  John indicated that almost all of our members had already sent him their dues.  Past members who have not paid their 2005 dues will be shortly dropped from the club’s roster and future mailings.

The membership was requested to attend the LIDXA weekly nets on Sunday night at 9PM local time on the Grumman Hauppauge repeater at 145.330/144.730 MHz (with 136.5 Hz PL).

NEW BUSINESS

The DXpedition to Glorioso Island, which was expected to begin in late May, has been postponed and is rescheduled until next October or November 2005.  The French Army, Navy and Air forces have strongly discouraged the landing of the radio team on Glorioso at the end of May due to security reasons.  With high demand for this country from club members, the LIDXA voted to donate $25 to this DXpedition.

Marty mentioned that he had received information from K1XN, who publishes the QSL database of “GOList” QSL manager database, that there is a special discount rate for club members who wish to subscribe to the List.  Contact Marty for details,

At least six LIDXA members have made plans to attend the Dayton HamVention this year.  Since the HamVention occurs during the next scheduled May meeting (over the May 19–22 weekend), it was decided that the May 20th meeting would postponed until the next Friday (May 27–the fourth Friday of the month).  This meeting would be a summary of Dayton events and a distribution of various handouts picked up at the show.

Marty summarized all the work that LIDXA member Dan, W2NDP, was doing down in Florida with his new DX club, “The Mid-Florida DX Association” (MFDXA).  The club has just been issued a new license, W4FDX.  Several LIDXA members were made honorary members of this new DX club.

A video on the May 2000 A52A DXpedition to Bhutan, “Land of the Thunder Dragon,” was shown.  This excellent video not only portrayed the ham radio aspects of this trip, but also presented a remarkable travelogue on this remote country.

This meeting concluded at 10PM after all the scheduled business and entertainment had finished.  The next meeting will be held on May 27, 2005–the fourth Friday of the month.
