MINUTES OF LIDXA INC. MEETING—January 21, 2000

Location: Polytechnic University, Farmingdale, N.Y.

The LIDXA President, Marty, NN2C, called the meeting of January 21st to order at 8:00 PM. Marty opened up the first meeting of the LIDXA in the new millennium and welcomed all members back after the holiday season. The membership also welcomed guests Mike, N2TX, KA2D, W2ASS, and NY6DX.

In terms of Good and Welfare, it was mentioned that Joe, W2YY, a founderer of the LIDXA in 1961, was visited recently by one of the club members, who reported that Joe was recuperating from a stroke and other medical problems. Also LIDXA member Andy, W2VZQ, was feeling better following open-heart surgery, and hopes to be out and around soon.

In terms of DX, members reported that the higher bands were usually open to all parts of the world. Specific DX activities mentioned:

OLD BUSINESS

The minutes of the November 19th meeting were prepared in advance by the LIDXA Secretary, Ed, K2MFY, and included in this month’s mailing to the membership. Thanks to the efforts of LIDXA Vice President, Pat, KE2LJ, these minutes also appear in the LIDXA Web site: http://www.qsl.net/lidxa. The minutes were accepted as written. There was no business meeting at the holiday party on December 17, 1999 so minutes were not required. Ed could not be at tonight’s meeting, so the minutes for this meeting, were recorded by Dan, WA2NDP, who will forward his notes to Ed for editing and publication prior to the February 18th meeting.

The LIDXA Treasurer, Russ, W2RL, was not at tonight’s meeting, so a Treasurer’s report was not given. Marty reminded the membership that dues in the amount of $25 are now due, and must be paid to keep your membership in good standing for the 1999–2000 calendar year.

In terms of our noisy repeater, there was no new status. In the meantime the LIDXA has use of the Grumman repeater, on 146.745 MHz.

The membership was reminded that January 23, 2000 has been set for the first "Ham Radio Forum" to be held in the Babylon Town Hall Annex in North Babylon. Seminars will include discussions on DXCC, RFI, Contesting, Packet Radio, RTTY, and many other amateur activities and interests for both the beginner and experienced amateur. The LIDXA would be represented and handing out information on club activities.

NEW BUSINESS

The membership thanked Larry, K2LS, for arranging the catering for the club’s holiday party held at Polytechnic on Friday December 17, 1999.

A discussion arose on the possibility of conducting ham radio examinations at the Polytechnic by LIDXA members, who are also accredited VEs (volunteer examiners). Members indicated that Saturday mornings would be the only possible time to hold these examinations. In general most members, who are also accredited VEs, looked favorably to this club activity. Marty said he would check further into this matter, but nothing would be done until the new restructuring confusion is cleared up (new regulations to go into effect April 15).

A number of members indicated that they planned to attend this year’s HamVention in Dayton. In particular Marty was interested to find out how many members planned to attend the DX dinner.

The business portion of the meeting concluded at 9:00 PM. Member Dave, W2UQ, then demonstrated a portable station. The antenna and rig were so small that Dave was able to carry this entire rig on the airplane when he recently went to Hawaii. Following this demonstration, a presentation was given by Mike, N2TX concerning the packet cluster and the new packet software that is being installed on his packet node (145.670 MHz).

This meeting concluded at around 9:45 PM after all the scheduled business and entertainment had finished.
