ST2X Operation
by Gerben A. Menting, PA5NT

Through my relations I have been in contact since the mid 90's with the authorities in Sudan who are responsible for frequency management and licensing. I knew that this would be a long process but that at the end, there would come a time that we would succeed. During this period, my good friend Amin Bashir of ACCESS Trading Co.Ltd. and local representative of Yaesu gave support. He finally managed to get my license application approved with the call sign ST2X.

A Perspective on Electronic QSLing
by Chris R. Burger, ZS6EZ

I would love to do all my QSLing through the Internet. That way, I would not have to spend evenings at home sticking labels, licking envelopes and tearing stamp perforations. I also wouldn't have to occupy lots of shelf space with cardboard boxes. Instead, I'll have a few CDs on a bookshelf. Electronic QSLing shows great promise, and I expect that by 2003 you will be able to get DXCC credit within minutes of your QSO. The ARRL is apparently already working actively in this direction.

ARRL International DX Contest

ARRL International DX Contest SSB part will be held on upcoming weekend March 1-2nd. Americans are among the best operators in the world, and there are always many participants in this contest. This makes it always really fun to take part in it. You will find links to contest rules, best norwegian scores and last years results further down on this page.

During CW part of the contest there was at times strong aurora, which made it difficult for us in the north. Still there were many LA station that showed up. The following LA's have been heard in the contest: 1VFA, 2IJ, 2O, 2QM, 2Z, 5KO, 5UF, 6FJA, 7MFA, 7SI, 8PDA, 9DFA, 9DK, 9HW and 9JM. Many of them are members of LA-DX-GROUP. This is a good news!

Openings on the upper bands are already shorter than last year, so extra attention must be paid to low bands this time. Let's hope we can all run this contest in peace.

Out support to Ron, ZL1AMO

We have received the following e-mail from Terri Wright, ZL1ADA daughter of Ron ZL1AMO:

"Thank you very much for the money which was received in my account today. My dad and family are very grateful for this kind donation. It was dad's birthday on Saturday. We had a very small family BBQ for him. I think it was a little too much for him. He still is very weak. He is able to only move around a little bit. He sits in his Radio Shack at watches the TV. Well take care and please thank everyone of dads friends for the help and kind wishes we have received over these past months.

Thanking you, Terri Wright"

Contest Software
by Richard Newstead, G3CWI

There can be few regular contest operators these days that have not encountered at least one of the contest software packages. Any level of familiarity with two or more seems rather rare. This makes the choice of the right package very difficult for most people as in most cases, there is no real opportunity to "try before you buy".

This article looks at the five market leaders in contest software. Of course, many normal logging packages support some contest operation but these five packages were designed just with contests in mind.

A Tour of Duty in East Timor
by Jose Ribeiro, CT1EEB

By August 1999 Peter Casier ON6TT sent a mail to the DX mailing lists asking for candidates to fill a WFP Telecom Officer vacancy, at the time I was looking for a change in my life and imediatelly replied. Some weeks later the phone ringed and Northern Angola was to be my initial training as a UN-WFP TC officer.

The SM0AGD story
or From Waltzing Matilda to 5-9
By Erik Sjölund, SM0AGD

I grew up in a small village in northern Sweden some 60 years ago. My parents were farmers and we seldom had time or money to travel outside the local area.

I was always interested in far-away places and people from other countries. My dream was to travel and meet people from other parts of the world.

Aurora is caused by interaction between the Earth's magnetic field and the solar wind (a mix of charged particles blowing away from the sun). During solar storms, enough of these charged particles make it through to the Earth's upper atmosphere that they interact with the earths natural magnetic field lines. When enough of these particles collide, energy is released in the form of auroral light.
