On the roof of Drammen
Spiraltoppen is the roof of Drammen. The famous tunnel in Bragernesåsen "Spiralen" up was completed in 1961 when Drammen celebrated its 150th anniversary. With six spirals loops the tunnel goes through a massif of eruptive rock (granite porphyry below, basalt above), ending at Nedre Skanse, formerly called Breidablikk.
The tunnel was
orginal: 1650 metres long, 9 metres wide, 3,1 metres heigh and from 20 metres to 213 metres
over the sea level with a gradient of 1:10, in 6 loops and each spiral has
a 70m diameter. Today it is 3,65 metres heigh and
large,
modern touring coaches can pass up. On the top it is
parking space for 200 cars.
From the Spiral Top you have a marvellous, fantastic panoramic view of the city, the river, fjord and mountains. Strategically situated on the Spiral Top a cannon - a 1904 Cocherill model. Every Norway's national day, 17. May, during the flag-raising ceremony the cannon is fired. Here you will find mamy sights spread out over the top.
My grandfather is one of the egineers
who built this famous road tunnel.
Welcome to visit Spiralen
a unigue attraction in the 'Middle of Town'!
