The oldest proofs that people have lived in these areas are the very fine 5-6.000 year-old rock carvings.The Vikings sailed their longship up to Drofn, the name of the harbour in those days. Nature has made Drammen to a unique centre for transport by sea as well as by land. It was the excellent harbour for export of timber from the great forests that formed the basis of this settlement. Paper mills and other industries were gradually added, and Drammen transformed itself into a very significant industrial town. The recent years, the industrial structure has changed its character. All paper mills have been closed down. The same applies to the iron, foundry, glass factory, shipbuilding etc. We have today get modern industies and service centres.
The river divide Drammen in two parts. Bragernes amd Strømsø were granted their municipal charters in 1715. In 1811 both were united into Drammen. Today Drammen is the capital of Buskerud fylke (county) and a regional centre of commerce, cultura and comnunication. Drammen is a prosperous town of 60.000 inhabitants, with a comprehensive and diversified industry.
Drammen is a junction for transport by road, sea and rail. Deep-water piers enable Drammen Harbour to receive giant ships. Drammen is norway's largest port of entry for cars and citrus fruit. Drammen is a center of education and higher studies. People ftom all part of the world lives in Drammen.
