CQ.

I am a 1950 model and my interest for HAM-radio started in mid 60's. I got my call LA4NL in 1966 when I was a member of the clubstation LA1H in my hometown Harstad. One of my first QSO,s was made with an all homebrew transmitter on 40 m CW contacting a ham who happened to have his QTH about 50 km away at Andoya. Ten years later I moved to the same place and started to work as a crewmember on the Orion surveillance aircraft and serviced in Andenes for 35 years. Today I am retired from the military and live in Harstad with my family.

Norway with only 4.3 million people, Harstad have 23 000 inhabitants and our clubstation LA1H have 32 members, but only few are active on the the bands. Interested in a sked ? Send an E-mail and we will give it a try !

Vesteraalen islands.

In the far North, in Lofoten and Vesteraalen, out towards the open sea you will find Andoy island (Andoya), with it's marshland and jagged peaks. The municipality of Andoy covers an area of 659.3 square kilometers, on the island of Hinnoy and Andoy. It has a population of almost 6.000, and over half whom live in Andenes, the administrative center. Andoy, at a latitude of almost 70 deg. north is farther north than Murmansk on the Kola peninsula in Russia. However, thanks to the Gulf Stream the climate is relatively mild. Andenes has the midnight sun from 19 May until 25 July, but then during the wintertime we have darkness all day long.

The fisheries are the traditional cornerstone of industry in Andoy, but since the fifties, the Norwegian Armed Forces have played an important role especially with the P-3 Orion surveillance aircrafts operating from Andenes. And in recent years activities relating to space research and tourism have also provided a substantial amount of employment.

During fall and winter the northern lights (aurora) are very active at this part of the world and Andoya Rocket Range located close to Andenes have conditions for studying atmospherice phenomena with the aid of rockets, balloons, aircrafts and ground based instrumentation. Rockets up to 20 tons can be launched from this site.

The great sperm whales are found in a specially nutrient-rich area in the sea northwest of Andenes. There are no other places in Norway where the edge of the continental shell lies so close to the shore as it does near Andenes. This is why Andenes is the only place in Northern Europe where you can with a high certainty see whales in it's right element.
