The mission of the Hancock Amateur Radio Association (HARA) is to serve and protect our families, the citizens of Hancock County, the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and the United States of America by providing emergency communication resources whenever needed for the health and safety of the public during natural disasters or other emergencies while participating in the camaraderie of the greatest avocation in the world........Amateur Radio!
HARA was formed on January 7, 2003 by the following charter members:
Harold Gillim, WE4G; Paul Vaughn, KF4ACQ; John Payne, N4COT; Ray Patton, N4RLU; Everett Greer, KD5ACO; Jim Wedding, KF4PSP; Gerald Basham, KG4SQD; David Garrett, KA4IWV; and Jim Mason, W4RCX.
The next meeting of the Hancock Amateur Radio Association will be Tuesday, July 1, 7:00 p.m. at the Hancock County Emergency Operations Center (EOC) located at 655 Hawes Blvd, Hawesville, KY. Talk-in on 145.130- for directions.
Welcome to our newest member, Dave Nugent, KD9LX, from Tell City! Dave has been a ham since 1979 and holds an Extra class license.
Minutes of previous meetings are now on the website.
The club has applied for a coordinated frequency of 146.715 for the repeater in order to avoid interference with the 145.130 linked wide area network repeater in Louisville. Club trustee John Payne is waiting for notification that the new frequency has been granted. When confirmation of the new frequency has been received, crystals will need to be ordered and installed in the repeater controller before the new repeater frequency will be operational.
Vice-president Paul Vaughn, KF4ACQ, is reporting that the club will not be able to sell soft drinks at the July 4-5 at Vastwood Park because Fiscal Court only permits one soft drink concession, and another organization already has received permission. However, HARA does have the concession for hamburgers, hot dogs, and bottled water. This will be discussed at the June 3rd meeting. David Garrett, KA4IWV, is checking on a canopy that we can use in conjunction with the soft drink trailer.

HARA/EMA Repeater
- Through the foresight of the Hancock Co. Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and the Hancock County Fiscal Court which approved the funding, an existing repeater was purchased in March, 2003 from K4DC and relocated from Lewisport to a high elevation in Hawesville, KY to provide a broader coverage area whenever emergency communications as provided by local Amateur Radio operators when needed. The repeater is currently located in a temporary location with a borrowed antenna, but it will soon be moved to it's permanent home in the Emergency Operations Center in Hawesville with it's antenna and linking antenna mounted on the 150 ft. EOC tower. This is a joint venture with funding provided by the EMA and the county while HARA is responsible for routine maintenance and operation of the system. An HF transceiver is also being purchased by the Hancock EMA and will be housed in the EOC for the exclusive use of HARA to communicate with KyEM in Frankfort, KY in the event of a natural disaster or other emergency when normal channels of communication may not be available.
