"Long Live the Wire Dipole !"

My Shack

I live on the fourth floor of a retirement building complex called the "The Arbors" in Newport News Virginia. I negotiated the right to install an antenna on the roof. From the street level the building is designed to appear as a simple sloped roof top. However in the interest of installing the required utility appliances including air conditioners, furnaces packs and other devices there is a big opening on the center of the roof. My off-center fed antenna is strung between the inside eves of the roof top. I am plagued with a very high noise level and find it difficult to receive any but the strongst signals.
From My Comfortable Operating Position, Ready For Action.

With the cooperation of Sam, KT4QW, I am able to listen to his transceiver over a VOIP network with a program called "Ventrilo". Ventrilo is a program designed for computer gamers to use a voice intercom while they are playing. Up to eight computers can link to a Ventrilo network. While there is a slight delay in the voice transmission, it works out fine on the morning 75M Jokers net.

My transceiver is an Icom 756-Pro with a small switching power supply. I have an MFJ tuner that will handle 200 Watts or so. I use two Dell laptop computers for all my uses including ham radio. I am considering running an amplifier to boost my transmit signal if it doesn't cause serious RFI problems in our close quarters with apartment neighbors.

About Me

I lived in Florida until a few years ago and retired from Harris Communications Company in Melbourne Florida. I move to Florida from upstate New York state in 1963. I worked as a manufacturing engineer for Harris and similar jobs with General Electric earlier. We moved to Newport News to be near our two daughter who live here.

I became a licensed ham in 1955 and upgraded to Extra class after taking a local class back in 2006. I operated at my home, before moving into the retirement setting, with several types antennas. Operations since moving have been more restrictive due to the high noise environment here. I enjoy participating in the mornimgs on the 75M Jokers Net on 3.933 MHz.
Graduating class for Extra Class License. My friend Harvey, KA4SSH and I graduated the same class. The course was taught by Curt K9CH far right in the photo. Most of those graduating from the course passed the Extra test.

Greetings from Newport News, VA !
