KP4... history

     In the early 20s when radio was in its firststages, Don Joaqu¡n Agusty-4JE (there were no 
prefixes assigned at the time) founded the first radio club in PuertoRico. It was known as "The 
Porto Radio Club" and its first information bulletin, the "Porto RicoRadio News" was printed in 
1922. Mr. Agusty was later responsible for the installation of thefirst commercial radio station
in the island, WKAQ which still exists on 580 kHz. 

     The secondclub was founded by Don Juan Alberto Wirshing- KP4BI, in 1937. It was foundedin
Ponce, P.R. At the time there werejust a few hundred amateursin Puerto Rico.  In those days
traveling across the island was difficultand costly.  Because of this problem the club was disbanded. 

     In 1939 the"Puerto Rico Amateur Radio Club was founded in San Juan. Its first presidentwas
Don Felix Rodriguez-K4FKC, at thattime the KP4 was non-existing. Later his call waschanged
to KP4CK when the FCC assigned theKP4 prefix. In 1948 "Ground Wave" the club bulletin was
published for the first time. 

     In 1967 "ThePuerto Rico Amateur Radio Society" was founded in Ponce, P.R. The society's
first president was Mr. Pedro Piza-KP4ASTpresently NP4A. 

     In 1982 the"Federacion de Radioaficionados de Puerto Rico" was founded in the westernpart of
Puerto Rico. This organization stillexists and now has members all over the island. Their first
president was Andres Hernandez-KP4ANG.Email: kp4ang@qsl.net. 

 In 1988 it was necessary to starta new club to serve amateurs in Puerto Rico. "The Puerto Rico
Amateur Radio League" was foundedby a group of veteran hams. Its first president was Victor
Madera-KP4PQ. At the present timethis organization serves Puerto Rico as the only ARRL
affiliated institution and the first"Special Service Club" of the ARRL outside the Continental

     In 1993, the"Confraternidad Puerto Rico Amateur" was founded in the north-west of PuertoRico.
Its first president was Victor Coimbre-WP4KWD.This club is divided in "regions" covering the
island. 

     At the presenttime there are over 9000 amateurs in Puerto Rico operating under the prefixes
KP4, NP4, WP4 and recently KP3, NP3,WP3. The Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, being part of the
United States, operates under thesame rules and regulations covering the Amateur Radio Services
(CFR 47 Part 97).
