My age is 47, and I have been a ham since 1994. I was born and raised in Farmington Utah, about 15 miles north of Salt Lake City. My great-great grandfather traveled west with the Mormon Pioneers in 1850 en route to the California gold fields in search of a new frontier. James David Wilcox fell in love, married, and settled in Farmington. That’s why I am here in Utah. I have been married to my wife Cathy for 10 years, and have a son Riley age 7. We also have 4 adult children who are married. We live in Syracuse, which is about 10 miles SW of Ogden in Davis County. Syracuse is a nice rural community that sits near the Great Salt Lake. I have long been interested in radio, and was pushed to get my license by a friend William Moyes, N7IE. He was responsible for my interest in Amateur Radio at an early age. His influence was responsible for me finally getting licensed some 25 years later, as well as my Extra Class also. Bill has been responsible for getting quite a few people in law enforcement licensed, and he worked for quite a few years in the same field, retiring just recently. I can't say enough good about this man, everyone can point to someone who pointed them in the right direction, and he was the one who directed me. I have high respect for anyone who can send continuous wave with a bug, and my jaw still hits the floor when I hear and see it.
Since 1977 I have been employed as a Deputy Sheriff by the Davis County Sheriff's Office in Farmington Utah. I have worked in every division within the department, and spent 18 years in the Patrol/Paramedic division as a deputy/paramedic. This was a slow paced area when I started there, where police calls were about 80 percent vs. 20 percent medical calls. Now with the growth of the county it’s just the other way around with medical calls taking the priority. I am now assigned to the justice services division where the traditional roles of the county sheriff, civil process, protection of the courts, transportation of inmates to and from court, are done.
I love the HF bands. I try to get on at least once or twice a week and primarily work PSK31, RTTY, and MFSK. I use a Yaesu FT-100D, and feed a Super Antenna MP-1 portable vertical. I have not had the time to install anything more permanent at the house, and this antenna seems to work great for PSK on 20 meters. And so far, with the antenna just setting on top of my desk, I have worked 49 states, and 25 countries with it. I also use MixWv2.07 as my digital software of choice. PSK has been a lot of fun but it is keeping me from getting the proper antenna up, and getting back into the other digital modes. I have also been experimenting with contesting, which is a lot of fun. No need to worry about me as a serious contester, until I get the 'RF' out of the house. Seems to be too many problems with RF in the CAT control causing the PTT to stay high after a transmission at powers near 50 watts. So until I get WAS for the MP-1, and an outdoor antenna, I will then focus my attention on other things. Soundcard technology has rejuvenated ham radio!
