Slow Scan TV

This is a fascinating aspect of the hobby of "Ham Radio".  Until recently this was an expensive hobby to enter.  But the recent revolution of the personal computer has changed all that.   Now you can enter the world of slow scan by just downloading a software program from the internet and setting it up on your computer.

Below is a picture that I copied from the space station, Mir, using a software program that I downloaded from the internet.  It was transmitted on 145.985 Mhz. I put in the ID markings.

This picture was featured in the 1999 spring issue of "Vision", the news letter of the "International Visual Communications Association".

The picture shows three of our great freshwater lakes. Lake Michigan is in the center of the picture with Lake Huron in the lower right. A small area of Lake Superior can be seen in the upper right corner.

The program that I was using when I copied the above picture is W95SSTV. There are several programs available. Some, like the one I was using uses the sound card in your computer to convert the slow scan sounds from your radio to digital for the SSTV program. Some others use a different type of interface depending on the program that you use.

Here are some pictures that I copied using my radio and computer.
