What Got Me Into Amateur Radio
My dad Donald, WE4MOO (formerly KJ6DCS), and I were at the De Anza Electronics Flea Market (eFlea) one Saturday morning to look for an Apple II. I noticed a bunch of guys standing around talking to their friends on these long range walky-talkies. Knowing they were amateur radio operators, I went home and looked it up. I had previously typed "ham radio" into Google Shopping and found radios that were around $1,000. After the flea market, I discovered that the license only cost $15 and that I could get a good handheld radio for $100.
I studied for the Technician license by taking online practice tests over and over again until I memorized most of the answers. I then took my test from one of my local clubs, the SCRA. This was in May of 2009. I passed the test and in July of 2009 I bought and received a new Yaesu VX-150. From then on, I was very active and interested in the hobby.
In January of 2010 I upgraded my license to General, and in August of 2010 I bought a Kenwood TS-120 and put up a 20 meter inverted "V" dipole for my HF Station.
