How I Got Started in the Hobby of Amateur Radio.
When I was a child, I lived at the V.F.W. National Home in Eaton Rapids, Michigan. This is a children's home that had about 130 kids at the time I was there. They had a counselor there by the name of Bruce Tanner (W8ISC). He was the first contact I had with Ham Radio. He also gave me my Novice test. At the time, I was the first child at the Home that got the Novice license. My first Novice call was WN8EUD in 1968.The club station at the home consisted of Hammarlund HX-50A transmitter and a HQ-215 receiver, with a Tri-Bander antenna. Just think, the only kid out of 130 to have a license. I never had to stand in line to use it. After leaving the home, I moved to the state of Nevada and my call was changed to WN7PPC. At that time Novice licenses were only good for two years, I had to wait one year to be able to retake the test and by that time I was back in Michigan and received the call of WN8OGW. I then moved to Chattanooga, Tn and after two more years when my license ran out, I retook the test and got the call of KA4EJS. Then I FINALLY upgraded to a General Class in the late 1970's. Then in about 1981 I upgraded to Advanced Class and changed my call to KI4CH. So there you have it, that is my story of how I  got started in Ham Radio.  Again, it would have not been possible if I hadn't been for one special Ham, Bruce Tanner (W8ISC) (William 8 Icky Sticky Candy), that shared his knowledge, and gave me the opportunity to have many years of enjoyment of being a Ham.
