My wife and I decided to go hiking in El Corte de Madera Creek Open Space Preserve because it looked interesting when we saw it in the new book called Peninsula Tales & Trails. One of the reasons we wanted to hike in this preserve is to see a sandstone formation that looks like a skull.
Of course I brought along the HT and portable beam because I saw a Vista Point (elevation 2301') on the preserve map and it looked like it might be a good place to take a break on the trail and do a little hilltopping. Here's part of the preserve map that shows the location of the Vista Point and the Sandstone Formation (Skull Rock). We parked in the Skeggs Point parking lot. |

Here's a picture of the Sandstone Formation that looks like a skull. Pretty creepy, huh? |

Here I am at the Vista Point doing some hilltopping. I was using the Vertex VX-150 and the Arrow II portable handheld beam. There wasn't much activity on 146.520 FM simplex that day. |

They didn't call it a Vista Point for nothing. Here's a view looking toward the west. The Pacific Ocean is just beyond those hills. |

We parked in the Skeggs Point Vista Point parking lot becauses it's very near the trailhead. |

I decided to do a little more hilltopping at Skeggs Point after the hike before heading home. You can bet I got some strange looks from folks at the Vista Point. |
