Software TNC Workshop

WHEN:
TBD
WHERE:
TBD
WHAT:
You will be able to build & test an inexpensive SOFTWARE-based TNC for packet
WHY:
Hardware TNCs are expensive ($179), and most computers have sound cards.  This tiny board and cables will let you interface ANY radio (HF/VHF/UHF, base/mobile/HT) to your computer and make most software (packet, PSK31, Navtex, Wefax, etc) think it’s talking to a hardware TNC.  You’ll learn about soldering techniques and construction tricks, as well as simple diagnosis to the point where you’ll be able to modify it for different radios in the future.
WHO:
All parties interested in learning to build a tiny project board and get it working
COST:
$25 per person includes all materials (except enclosure)
PREPARE:
First, check out the following web site for more detail, including required tools: http://home.attbi.com/~wiedemann/private/projects.htm . PLEASE BRING YOUR OWN TOOLS to the workshop, if possible. If you have a laptop (or want to lug your desktop) that is sound card equipped (audio in & out jacks), then download and install (DO NOT CONFIGURE) the software from the links on the project info page given above.  The software TNC should work with any "Wintel" compatible computer running Windows 95 or higher. Read as much as you can about the project.  The more familiar you are with the concepts, the more likely you’ll be able to walk out with a working system
WHAT NOW?
Contact Rudi Wiedemann at [email protected] to register.  Since we are ordering parts in advance, only pre-paid attendees will get materials kits. The workshop is limited to 12 participants, with preference given to CERT Comm members.
