Note: If you are trying to use Winamp version 3.0 with Shoutcast it wont work.

You will need to download the previous version of Winamp.... click here to download it

The system I would recommend to use now is the Shoutcast server.

You will need the following software for this to work

(NOTE: TO MAKE IT SIMPLE DOWNLOAD ALL THE BELOW SOFTWARE IN ORDER STARTING WITH WHATEVER SOFTWARE YOU DONT HAVE YOU MUST HAVE WINAMP INSTALLED FIRST)

1)The Winamp player the lite version is all you need
download it from here

2)The Shoutcast server click here to download it

3)The dsp codec. click here to download it

Download the Fraunhofer dsp here version 1-8-0 ONLY DOWNLOAD THIS DSP IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING OTHERWISE DOWNLOAD THE DSP ON LINE 3

4)The linerec plugin.This allows the winamp player to play audio through your computer sound card download it here

Thats all you need to download everything should have downloaded and installed automatically in the right places now I will explain how to get it all working.

To get the audio signal form your scanner into your computer, you will need to get a cable with the appropriate connectors and connect one end of the cable from the speaker or headphone output of your scanner to the aux or audio input in your computer sound card. If you don't have the cable simply visit your local Radio Shack store to get one.(DO NOT USE THE MIC INPUT ON YOUR COMPUTER IT CAN DAMAGE YOUR COMPUTER EXCEPT IF YOUR MIC INPUT DOUBLES AS A LINE IN .) Once you have the audio cable connected and working the next thing to do is enable the line recorder dsp in Winamp.You do this from winamps options then preferences menue go down to where it says plugins then input, click on the Nullsoft line recorder for Shoutcast.When you click on it a grey box will come onto your screen saying Nullsoft line-in recorder.User linerec:// to use click on ok. If you don't see the plugin it means you don't have it download it from download 4) above.Next in the Winamp player go to play then location the open location box will pop up.In the white box type linerec:// then click on open This allows winamp to talk with your soundcard. Now when you hit the play button on winamp you should see linerec:// in the playback window. The next thing to set up is the dsp plugin remember that .You do this from Winamps options then preferences menue, go down to where it says DSP/effect. Select the source dsp you see in the window, click on the config button. The plugin should now show up on your computer screen. This is where you configure your broadcast info and the ip address of your broadcast and the bitrate you want to broadcast at.Click output on the dsp menue then select connection.If you are using your own computer as the server then the default settings for your ip address and port are ok it should read localhost under ip and 8000 under port. If you are relaying your broadcast to a server then this is where you would put that servers ip and port. Click on the yellowpages tab.(In order for your broadcast to show up in the proper Shoutcast directory you must select at least one genre. I suggest scanner so that your broadcast will show up in the scanner directory. If you use more than one genre separate them with commas. Depending on which dsp you are using you enter this data on the yellow pages area in the 1-8-2 version and the edit menue in the 1-8-0 version.)Should be self explanitory. If you have problems you can email me for help. Now click on the encoder tab. Here is where you set your bit rate for your broadcast. Make sure you select encoder one throughout this process.Now click on the input tab. Select the Winamp choice first if it dosnt work then come back and select soundcard.Ok you have winamp running. The linerec is running, your dsp is configured, your scanner audio is running through your sound card. The last thing to set up is the Shoutcast server. When you start the server you will see edit config click on it to see the text similar to the text in the white box below. Looks a little overwheming dosn't it. Well don't be afraid of it there are only a couple things you need to do here.

Change only the capitalized stuff in red letters you shouldn't have to touch anything else.

; SHOUTcast Distributed Network Audio Server configuration file
; Copyright (C) 1998-2001 Nullsoft, Inc.
; All Rights Reserved.
; Last modified Jul 23 2001

; If you want to manage multiple configurations, just copy
; this file to another name, and run sc_serv with that name
; such as:
; sc_serv.exe sc_leet.conf

; ***************************
; Required stuff
; ***************************

; MaxUser. The maximum number of simultaneous listeners allowed.
; Compute a reasonable value for your available upstream bandwidth (i.e. if
; you have 256kbps upload DSL, and want to broadcast at 24kbps, you would
; choose 256kbps/24kbps=10 maximum listeners.) Setting this value higher
; only wastes RAM and screws up your broadcast when more people connect
; than you can support.
MaxUser=PUT YOUR MAX NUMBER OF LISTENERS HERE

; Password. While SHOUTcast never asks a listener for a password, a
; password is required to broadcast through the server, and to perform
; administration via the web interface to this server. This server should
; consist of only letters and numbers, and is the same server your broadcaster
; will need to enter in the SHOUTcast Source Plug-in for Winamp. THIS VALUE
; CANNOT BE BLANK.
Password=PUT YOUR PASSWORD HERE

; PortBase. This is the IP port number your server will run on. The
; value, and the value + 1 must be available. If you get a fatal error when
; the DNAS is setting up a socket on startup, make sure nothing else on the
; machine is running on the same port (telnet localhost portnumber -- if you
; get connection refused then you're clear to use that port). Ports < 1024
; may require root privledges on *nix machines. The default port is 8000.
PortBase=8000

Now that wasn't so bad was it. Now close the config file and restart the server your now done and ready to broadcast.

The proper order for starting your broadcast is as follows;

1)Hook your scanner audio to your computer and turn your scanner on.

2)Start your Winamp player select linerec:// from the open location menu and hit the play button.

3)Start your Shoutcast server.

4) Click the connect button on the dsp plugin on your screen.

Thats it your broadcasting!!

P.S. I have had a number of people wanting to know how to find their ip address. This url will tell you.Remember if your ip address is not static meaning it changes each time you connect to the net you have to change that info in the url link for your broadcast that you put on your web page. By the way the proper url format for your web page link to your broadcast is http://yourip:yourport/listen.pls This will open your stream in the default mp3 player of your listener.If you are using media encoder to broadcast use this format mms://yourip:your port

To see visually how to set this all up go to my new flash presentation of course the flash plugin is needed to view it. CLICK HERE TO VIEW SHOUTCAST FLASH PRESENTATION
