SEVERE THUNDERSTORM-WIND EVENT PROBABILITIES

The SPC has begun an experiment of forecasting severe weather using probabilities. These outlooks are purely subjective and are not created automatically by a computer algorithm. The current outlooks, which are categorical in nature (Slight/Moderate/High Risk), do not do as effective a job of expressing either the uncertainty involved in the forecast or the specific risk of either hail, wind, or tornadoes in the forecast. The probabilistic outlooks which are being created at the SPC are an attempt to address both of those issues
