Welcome to my Home Page! I am no cyber publisher by any means but will try my best to bring a page that's both useful and fun to surf by all cybernausts and specially for those of you who share my same interest on Amateur Radio.
Carlos Avellanet, KF4RRN
radio relay nut
My name is Carlos Avellanet. I took up radio relay after bought a pair of $29.99 CB Radios from a mail catalog to be used as emergency equipment in both my wife's and my own car. For a long time I have used radio communications at work and it was very dull and no informal chat was allowed. After firing up the CB's and finding out how easy and very interesting was to be on the air informally and unrestricted, I was hooked! From there the interest kept on growing and a friend suggested I take the Amateur Radio Operator (HAM) test. After a few weeks of study time I successfully passed and was granted my Technician Class license. I have since upgraded to Gerneral Class and presently studying to upgrade to Extra Class. I am of the ARRL and of the local Playground Amateur Radio Club. With 10 meters being my favorite band, I also joined Ten-Ten International (member # 70986) an organization dedicated to the preservation and effective use of the band.
My QTH station consist of two Yaesu HF rigs; an FT-301D complete base station and an FT-757GX. On the V/UHF side, I use a Kenwood TR-9000 All Mode rig and an Alinco DR-130 for local repeater FM operation. While mobile I use a Kenwood TW-4000 dual band and a President HR-2600 10 meter rig. I also own a Kenwood TH-79A handheld and several other backup and QRP rigs--too many to list here. However, I have a soft spot for tube gear and over the years I have acquired quite a large collection of Swan Radios and while I list the Yaesus as my primary station I find myself using the Swans more and more as the days go by. My favorite Swan is the model 700S which I am still in the process of restoring, but is still operational and I use it regularly. When I do not have the 700S in parts on the bench I rely on my trusty 500CX SS16. For antennas I use a combination of attic mounted and outdoor locations. I live in an 'antenna restricted' neighborhood but so far I have been able to get away with my antennas because the elementary school CCTV 80 foot tower is located right behind by backyard privacy fence. Presently I am using a ground mounted Hustler BT5V, a Cushcraft R-7 on a 15 foot pole, and a G5RV in inverted V configuration. I recently acquired an Isotron SO-20 but haven't had much luck with it.
Aside from the radios, I spend a lot f time a lot of time in front of the computer and ran Miami Links BBS for over 8 years before finally giving up to the Internet. I hope one day I would be able to convert all my experience as a SysOp and apply it to my radio hobby. I am very interested in packet and other types of digital communications as well any kind of electronics project. I am active in satellites as well as in APRS.
I am also a car racing fan, any kind of racing, but prefer NASCAR. My favorite driver is Bill Elliott.
NOTE: Even though I have time to spend on my hobbies, I also spend a great deal of time with my wife and kids. There is no hobby in the world that would take so much of my time that I would not find any time for my own family. I strongly suggest you do the same!! :-)
