Sylvia

Sylvia Jean Stone
Born in Cuba....New York and was raised in Olean, New York.
She has always enjoyed art and came by it naturally! As a child she loved to draw in school! One time she was caught drawing the teacher during class study time....& got away with it!
The drawing was to see how nice the teacher would look if fixed up a little! So she found the power of art!
Future plans to become a dress designer fell way to marriage & motherhood.
I moved to California in 1960 where color and light are so powerful & inspiring.

Art became a release, a pass time & finally an asset for church related activities! Posters & drawings were a release & entertainment that proved to be an excellent ministry.
Sylvia admonishes mothers who use motherhood as an excuse to not paint to use it as a great extension of your creative juices!

Finally as she & husband Arnold got involved with sculpture, she discovered the joys of third dimensional work! As entrepreneurs in Crescent City, California in their redwood sculptor shop, they both discovered their own styles of work complimented each other! However, the constant exposure to the elements of the business played havoc on her health and she was forced to leave that medium!

Then Sylvia became a gallery director at the Lighthouse Art Center in Crescent City where she was constantly exposed to all media of art and was blessed with exposure to the main line instructors, known world wide.

Painting was always a joy, & water colors a favorite medium which led the way to silk scarves painting. The larger the better!

One workshop she found most helpful to color control was Jim Fabor's. There she learned to use a limited pallet, 4 acrylic colors: Acra Violet, Phth. Blue, Cadmium Yellow Light, Cadmium Red Medium almost exclusively with white.

Selling work in the Coast Redwood Harbor Art Gallery was a cross between pleasure & profit, as well as the local annual 4th of July Art show.

Now she is always looking for an excuse to paint! Painters are inspired by persons who can appreciate it! Enjoy!

Arnold

I have drawn as far back as I can remember. The first drawings were of all the comic book characters. In grade school I would do all the silhouette drawings of the presidents for the class to cutout on the different presidents days. My first were pencil drawing. Trees were a favorite to do in black and white.
The first color painting came about because a friend gave me twelve jars of automotive enamel. The paintings were landscapes and took forever to dry. That developed the interest in color art.
I was able to come by some acrylics and started painting with them, not very rewarding with all the mistakes and muddy colors.
I then heard that the library had art books, this is what I needed. After learning what a color wheel is for, things started to improve. Getting my first set oils made a big difference. From then on it was paint, paint to get experience.
The big day was when a friend asked if they could have a painting! Without waiting a minute I said yes, which one. For a while, when every any one ask for a painting, they got it.
Then that day arrived when someone asked how much for a painting, I was so taken back, that I shuddered out a low figure, scared they might change their mind, they didn't.
I then learned that oil paintings will sell and for good money.
So that is what got me started painting landscapes and seascapes.
I am now looking at the field of southwest art.
